Hole in my exhaust can.

I have a CD28 with a MD7B. My exhaust can is rusted through and dripping hot seawater into my bilge. Does anyone know if there is a supply somewhere for this part? It appears to be a custom fit job by Cape Dory. Has anyone rebuild their system using industry standard parts? It doesn't seem to be roc...

Pitted shaft in the stuffing box. What to do?

While the boat was out, I decided to pull out and replace the packing. I found that the shaft was pitted pretty bad on both sides. My zinc had worn off and was missing for probably a couple months, at least. The yard says I need to replace the shaft or the pitting will just keep tearing apart my stu...

Stansion diameter?

I have one of those fancy BBQ's that hangs off the rear bars. I have a mounting kit for 7/8-1" pipe, but it doesn't seem to fit. Before I go "try somethin else" I was wondering if anyone knew the stock diameter of these bars? I didn't have a caliper with me.

Product Endorsement - black mark remover

I've had some trouble getting the black stains from the port hole run-off removed. I tried all kinds of stuff. After reading a comparison test in Practical Sailor, I decided to try the Nautical Ease Anti-Skid and Black Streak Cleaner (or something to that affect). It worked beautifully. Also took of...

PU or PVA D3

Most regular carpenters glue is water based Polyvinyle Acetate (PVA). It is a water based glue that cures during evaporation. Most of them are not water proof (D2) but some are. The water proof standard is D3 or D4 (different levels of exposure before breakdown). If you use it, just make sure it is ...

A Track...Yeah, that's the ticket.

I can't believe they'd even think to open the door into the v-berth. My CD is set up just like Angela describe. I too have the velcro thingy and have the same fears. I also have the same fears about the latch, though not realized. Hence, my concern about finding a new solution for the latch. Acually...

Thanks for the advise.

Thanks for the sources. I didn't think about the fading issue with the art store pigments. I was mostly concerned about compatibility. The boat paint is too expensive not to modify if I don't like the color. At $32 a quart, a lot a money is going to go into "testing" otherwise. Besides tha...

Switch doors

Yesterday I took off my solid door and move the bifold, v-berth door to the aftward bulkhead. This makes a huge improvement for getting the right amount of room. Since the bi-fold needs to fit into a dado of sorts to keep from swinging open as a solid door should, I need to add a 1/2" teak to t...

Thanks for the advise. The project is getting bigger.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll forgo the Blue hull and stay with white. My deck is already bright white and in decent shape. I was hoping to just do the non-skid. My cabin top is also white, including the non-skid. But it is in good condition. I'm interested in hearing about mixing my own colors...

Topside Color Scheme- seemed like a good idea at the time

I have a CD28. I was interested in putting on a more contemporary color scheme. I have Royal Blue canvas. I thought of using the Interlux Cream color for my non-skid with a white deck. I thought this would go well as the Cream is more yellowish than the beige colors. I thought this would work well w...

CD28 Modification of the door to the head.

I've always been quite annoyed by the bulkhead mounted door going into my head. It swings on a port side hinge. The way it is set up, it is nearly impossible to get the door open, or closed if you are on the foreward side of the bulkhead, unless you step into the v-berth cabin. Of course, in the mid...

Stating the obvious?

I may be stating the obvious, but it took me a while to learn the obvious. Cut the tip of the caulk at 45 degrees allowing for a hole of circumfrance that is just under the width of the gap to be caulked (or about 1/8" if you are not caulking to fill a subtantial gap). Hold the caulk gun about ...

Wood prep supply

Woodworkers use Oxyalic Acid to brighten wood that has blackened from getting wet. The tanins in some woods like Red Oak will react and get black when exposed to water. It is a common sight in flooring when the finish starts to wear off. You can find it with the wood bleaches in the wood finishes se...

Remote - absolutely.

I want to second that suggestion. Also, if you put the stereo under the companion way facing forward, you might also want to put something shiny on the bulk head. I can control my stereo from the cockpit with the remote by bouncing the signal off the bulkhead. I don't know if it is because of the hi...

Ipod, MP3 or some other solid state.

I love music, but am slow to adopt technology. I didn't buy my first CD player until I couldn't find cassettes any more. At the time, I had over 1000 vinyl disks (remember those). My brother got an iPod for christmas and I thought it was so cool I went and bought one. The deal is that for $300, I wa...
