Indented Vee?

Hey OJ Could you explain the Indented Vee for the rear cross member? I'm having trouble visualizing it. My Ensign Triad has a straight rail from fore of the keel to 12" past the rudder (it was speced for a Sea Sprite 23') and I need to drop the rudder. I've worked out a way to do this, of cours...

Another consideration

Sail quality can have a dramatic effect on healing. A boat with old blown out sails will heal like crazy before it starts to move, and will over-react to every puff. New sails will result in a stiffer, more responsive boat that tracks better. Less stress on the boat, too. So how were the sails on th...

2000-2200 foot depth to bottom?

About 5 seconds until the bottom surfaced. I'm figuring speed of sound in water for the pulse (1 mile/sec.?)
Anyone have any idea? I'm curious.
Any USN DDS experience here?

Quite an excellent article

http://www.boatus.com/goodoldboat/Marine_exhaust.htm Powlas & Gerr are both great highly knowledgable technical writers, and the illustrations are first class. If you have to start to reconstruct with new parts that require more modifications then you planned, at least you will know what you are...

Pulled my Ensign builder's plans

They include the hull lines drawing and cross sections. Keel, cockpit floor (8.5') and waterline dead parallel. Open cuddy cabin floor inclines slightly rearward towards drain holes. Mast rearward rake measures about 1.5 degrees (that's 8 "; P dimension of 25' 5") aft with mast shoe at mid...

"Upgrading the cruising sailboat"

by Dan Spurr. Just discontinued in softcover, it's similar to the Casey book, but better written and more clearly illustrated. Spurr also writes about many other things germane to selection a boat like ours, and takes a holistic approach to what a owner should consider. If I have any criticism of th...

The second wave

I'm for filling in the bilge, and I'm in good company. It's not about the expense and effort, it's about safety. Consider that a deep bilge would allow more time to fix a leak before economic damage (ruined furniture, sinking at the slip, confusion over wether your guests are getting your limited su...

Differential balsa

If you find it easy to do, you might try replacing the strip-down-the-middle baltek with a slightly thinner version then the rest. Or if you don't want to hassle the procurement, use the proper thickness for the antiskid areas and a router to trim the center stripe. My Ty water migration experience ...

Could you adapt this?

If not, the principal seems useful. Any fishing tower place should be able to whip up a few from scrap stainless or aluminum.

a 3 db decrease in signal strength means the power is 1/2 of its' previous value. 50' of Rg-58 will cut your 25 watt signal to 12.5 watts. This is informative: http://www.geocities.com/rf-man/db.html Given the overall mast weight, and the amount of junk that crusers pile on up there (radar, wind ind...
