Re: Holding tank holding us back!

For clearing the salt scale in the hoses I agree that fresh water flush does wonders in prevention. However when I had a heavy scale build up I used full strength muratic acid and let it cook overnight. Then flush until the tank is full and dump. With this method I would not allow any baking soda ne...

Re: What were they thinking...?

I think you are on the right track. Where you mocked up a backer from copper pipe. Use a short length of 3/4 pvc shaped to fit the hull, then fill with epoxy, say 6-10 since it shapes well. Then drill through for the bolt and use fender washers on both ends.

Or you could use a pair of sweeps with the winches as thole pins.

Re: Outboard Motor to fit the well of my 25CD

Ben/Pete I bought #68 new back in 73. One of my first modifications was to put shelves in the engine space The shelves were plywood and and fiberglassed. I filled the space under them with two part foam. This reduced the amount of water that collected there and gave me a good place to secure the gas...

Re: Hull zinc

Steve Having used hull zincs on my boats a couple observations. Your location sounds good however you might want to consider copper strap rather than wire. Also be careful sealing the bolts coming through the hull. Sealants are also insulators and you are dealing with very low voltage and current. A...

Re: Miscellaneous Questions for CD 25

For the compass. As has been suggested a bracket mount on a weather board or mount something like this on a team pad on the sea hood. Either way is easy and puts it where you can glance at while steering and scanning the horizon. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/ritchie-navigation--flush-mount-trek-co...

Re: Plugged Scuppers

I have found the easiest way to clear scuppers with the boat in the water is with a hand bilge pump and suck the stuff out rather than compacting it as coat hangers and plungers can do. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IV8PSS/ref=sxbs_sxwds-stppvp_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=d45777d6-4c64-4117-...

Re: 1974 Cape Dory 25 - outboard well removed????

The early 25s didn't have any liner in the motor well. On mine (#68), I put two shelves and filled under them with foam before glassing them. I also put strap eyes in for lashings. Yes the gas cans would occasionally float and even turn over. I sent a letter and pictures to Cape Dory and got a nice ...

Re: Compass Advice

Back when I had my 25, I put a surface mount compass on the sea hood over the hatch. I was on the centerline, didn't block sitting and was easy to use. To light it I ran a wire under the hood over to the switch panel.

Re: Compass deviation

In the VHF, the speaker and microphone have magnets in them. Most likely the chassis inside the radio is steel. As to adjusting there are several good sources of information. Ritchie publishes fairly easy to follow instructions. You should be able to get it close, then make a deviation table if need...

Seeing that you have a ketch try it on the mizzen. That should be about as far from error producing things as possible and still convient to the helmsman.

Then Google "cold galvanizing spray paint". The Pettit is just an expensive version. All are 93 percent zinc.

As to West.Marine's prices "Comment Censored".

Re: Advice Capping off unused seacocks.

Rather than using wood or plastic plugs I would use bronze plugs or caps. Properly wrapped with Teflon tape or pipe dope they are secure and yet removable if needed. I would also service them and give them a goodly coat of grease.

A simple fix is to run a light line from the forestay turn buckle up to the mast just above the goose neck. Pass the sheets over it.
