Re: trailer tongue weight
5.8% is probably fine on a Triad sailboat trailer. If you want a little more, mount a spare tire or move the spare tire mount further forward a few feet.

Re: trailer tongue weight
Is this a boat trailer or a cradle on a flat bed utility trailer? Boat trailers usually have longer tongues and the axles further back compared to the overall length. They generally tow best with about 7% +-2% tongue weight. A flat bed utility trailer usually has the axles further forward and usuall...

Re: 8 v 7 v. 6 pitch prop on 5hp
6” OEM is nearly impossible to find, though Solas makes a 6” pitch but still hard to get… I suggest you create an ebay watch query for the 6" and 7" part numbers. Buy both in the order they come up at a good price. I've gotten a bunch of spare props that sat around in sellers cellars unti...

Re: Center of balance CD22
P.S. The rule of thumb is that tongue weight should be 10-15% of gross weight of boat plus trailer. That depends a lot on how far back the axles are on the trailer. Usually boat trailers are best around 5-10%, flat utility trailers are best around 8-13%, travel trailers/enclosed car haulers are bes...

Re: ethanol-free fuel
Be careful with 100LL, especially around kids. While 100LL AV gas has lower lead than 100/130 AV gas, it still has far higher lead content than leaded land/boat gas used to have. There were some very good reasons leaded land/boat gas was discontinued. IQ levels have risen after leaded gas was phased...

Re: ethanol-free fuel
Have you tried cutting the gas (turning off the petcock if an internal tank or disconnecting the hose if an external tank), giving it 1/4 choke, and letting it run out of gas every time you aren't going to use it in the next day? Shouldn't hurt a carbureted 4-stroke and should leave a lot less gas i...

Re: 8 hp or 9.9hp in at CD25 well
If you go for an older 2-stroke Johnson/Evinrude the 6hp and 8hp are the same weight. The difference is in the intake/carb design not the engine itself. Mercury makes a 9.9HP electric start 2-stroke that weighs about 60lbs today. Unfortunately it's not available in the US. The US 4-stroke models are...

I would avoid Somerset Sails. I've heard good things about the Rolly Tasker dealer in Florida and my local North loft.

Re: leaking thru hull on '76 Typhoon
On my CD25 I carefully cut out the liner with an abrasive hole saw and epoxied a round block of 1" thick G10 board the inner diameter of the same hole saw. The I tapped the block and inserted bronze studs like on this page: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/backing_blocks I am much more confid...

Re: Cape Dory 25 Triad Trailer
I don't think that is a CD25 trailer. The CD25 is about 4000 lbs and the Triad for it is 1600 lbs. Mine has two 3500lb axles to support that weight.

Re: Patching mast screw holes
I'd get some threaded aluminum rod of the same diameter/pitch as the threaded hole. Tap the hole if necessary. Dip the rod in epoxy and screw it into the hole. When the epoxy hardens cut it off with a hack saw and file it flush with the mast. Shouldn't look too bad and should be almost as strong as ...

Re: Ethanol Blues...
I've heard that Starton counteracts other ill effects of E-10 in both two and four strokes, including automobiles. I haven't used it, because I haven't had any ethanol problems. But per the MSDS Startron is 99%+ Naptha (aka Coleman fuel) and < 0.5% "proprietary organic compounds". You're ...

Re: Ethanol Blues...
IMO your mechanic is almost as full of it as the corn lobbyists that forced us into using the ethanol. Your mechanic's estimate is probably correct for an open bucket in Miami. Even with the weather we've been having lately, gas lasts a lot more than three weeks in a sealed container in Massa...

Re: CD25 with golf cart (GC2) batteries?
The tutorials cover the whole nine yards about batteries. Except there is no reference to weight and balance calculations on a narrow stern sailboat which is by far my biggest concern. :-) Reading the archives it seems like several people have two group 27 batteries in the front of the cockpit lock...
