Sailing Toast

No not the kind you eat.. the kind you drink to ! Does anyone have a good sailing toast. The only one my aging memory could come up with was the fair winds and following seas variety. A friend is leaving ion a long sea journey and I would like to send him off appropriately.

Under Bottom Paint

Minke is starting to show her age (11) and the condition of her bottom is nearing the point where I can forsee having to strip her bottom in a year or two. In the meantime I was wondering if there is any recommendations for what, if anything, to apply to white /gel coat exposed by sanding before app...

The pivotal point

If there were no sail attached to the boom than the pivot point would not be the same as when a loose footed main is attached or even if a footed (?) main is attached. With three points of attachment (at the mast / at the vang- poreventer/ and at the end of the boom,or even with three more mainsheet...

preventers and boom stress

I've heard different opinions about the stress placed on the boom depending on how far outboard of the mast the preventer is attached. I would like to hear from some of our engineers about the actual amount of pressure / stress on the boom when a preventer is placed middle of the boom versus the end...

Vangs

If you decide to increase the purchase on the vang (beyond 4;1) be sure to connect it using a strong fixture. Bails are the strongest as they require a thru bolt . You may want to avoid thru bolting the mast end in which case you need to find a mast fitting that uses multiple screws and treading the...

Ais for free

To get an idea of how Ais will work in your area of the world, just go to this website. Its not as fast as a receiver but its free. You will be able to see how many vessels in your area use AIS, as well as all the AIS infomation you would get with a receiver.

alternatives to loran

Take out your old radio direction finders ! They probably still work. Maybe not if the signal is digital? Our TVs have gone digital will our radios follow. Will our RDFs also become obsolete? How will we live without them?

Look for these locks

On your multi year trip around the Great lakes, I strongly recommend an area I visited two years ago. When you get to Lake Ontario be sure to check out CANAL RIDEAU. This is a world heritage site that I find most Americans are unfamiliar with. It is a series of 50 locks which join canals with lakes t...

Swimming in Casco Bay

Prior to the float- in Casco Bay had 4 inches of rain in twenty four hours. An all time record. Not only was the water cold (as we have had precious little sun this month) but the color can best be described as "mud" (to be non profane). It was not your ordinary clean but cold fluid. Rich ...
