Re: Fiberglass Hull Deck Joint

Here is another excellent example of glassing over the hull deck joint. Serious work.

Re: MD7A vs. MD7B

My 1983 CD 28 is a MD 7B. It is raw water cooled (freshwater since she sails the Great Lakes :) No heat exchanger. I concur with the RPM figures. Although to tell the truth by the time it got to 3000 rpms, it would sound like the pistons were trying to change cylinders. I never twist it that tight.

Do any 28's have a shaft log hose?

My 28 #341 does not have a shaft log hose. It seems like the 28 may be the only model that doesn't. I'm wondering why. And why they didn't build others without the hose. It would seem like one less potential failure point. Am I missing something obvious?

Re: Hi there. I'm fixing up a 1975 Cape Dory 28

Paul, John Stone is rebuilding a CD 36 and recently installed a Cape Horn windvane. Excellent series of pictures and descriptions of the install. While most 36's are wheel steered, Far Reach has a tiller and so would be instructive for your project. http://farreachvoyages.com/dailylog.html There is ...

Always something bigger

Bigger is better when it comes to motion at sea. The biggest difference between my 25 and 28 is that the 28 will punch through head seas that would almost stop the 25 in her tracks. And I'm sure a 31 or 33 or 36 would be even better. But I can afford this one, it fits in the shed during the winter, ...

Welcome to the CD family!

You will want to check out this site if you haven't already. Fred really got in depth on his rebuild of his CD 28.

Did you?

Robert, Not sure from reading your post if you have loosened the nut on the seacock. The seacock itself is a tapered plug that is pulled into the body of the seacock. If you back off the nuts you should be able to apply fairly forceful taps to the end of the threaded shaft. Use the nuts to protect t...

Wait and see

I hate to disagree with OJ but I don't think moving the mast base is either easy or a good idea. It is tied into the structure of the boat where it is. Sail the boat first and see if it has excessive weather or lee helm. My guess is you may need to shorten the headstay. I had a 1978 CD 25 and that w...

Auto pilot

Cliff, I would make an auto pilot an absolute must. The advantage in avoiding fatigue, the ability to do other things while the ap steers, all add up to a must have in my opinion. You still have to keep a proper lookout, but I've never had a cruise where the autopilot wasn't voted most valuable crew.

I can

I can turn my MD7B by hand. I feel a resistance at the compression stroke but I can still turn it. It runs fine and has always been this way in the years I have had it.

I don't think you need batt cars

Dick, I've had a full batten main for years and I don't have batt cars. Just the same slugs that came with the boat originally. Sailmaker told me that you only need them on big boats with big sails. My former 25 was fine and so is my 28. Never any problem putting the sail up or lowering it. Less com...

Looks like it took a side impact. Would help to know a bit more about the piece and where it is used.

Second the motion

Neil is exactly right. Sail it before you change it. You'll often be surprised by how things are different than you thought they'd be. Avoid wasting money and do overs.

Probably the shaft packing

Dick, I'm inclined to believe that the likely cause is the shaft packing. If you look at the area of the packing with a flashlight you should be able to see at what rate the packing is dripping. You can probably adjust it to slow the leak down. It is a wear item that needs adjusting. If you have nev...

Had a similar problem

I had a 1978 Johnson 15 hp on my CD25. It never missed a beat for 19 years and then one day it just quit while it was running. I was out cruising (doesn't it always happen then) and contacted a mechanic the marina recommended. He said there are only two things that every fail on that motor and he wa...
