It definitely is a Cape Dory 27. I know because the boat is moored about 100 yards from mine. I informally met the owner while he was washing his boat at the dock. I hope this turns out alright.

Here was our trip taken last year during our 2 week outing. The courses are so straight because we motored most of the entire trip. Last year, early July, cold and no wind. Except the trip back from Block to Mystic, sailed the entire leg. [img]http://www.cd27spirit.us/images/board/2009cruise/2009Cru...

I second Carl's remarks. Though our 27 has the original bonded grounding system in place, I still believe we are not 100% protected from a strike. To my understanding the only thing predictable about lightening is that it is unpredictable. Better some protection than nothing at all. The last link gi...

You could probably install a plastic tee into the main pickup line close to the manual pump to hook up a 12-volt one.

Instant hard over on the rudder vs. turning and turning a wheel. I have the tiller and would agree with others, the tiller is the way to go on the 27. To my understanding an Edson wheel was offered as an option and probably installed by the dealer at time of purchase. Unless a previous owner install...

Yes, small diesel motors can start in reverse where the the intake pipe becomes the exhaust and the exhaust becomes the intake. Not good for the motor and you should shut it down immediately. There may not be any oil pressure generated by the pump and the water pump vanes may become damaged from run...

Good read -- Man overboard at night!

For those of us that sail at night. Yes, it can happen, a crew member or yourself can fall overboard; in any sea condition. The story got my adrenalin running, if you have ever sailed at night you know how dark and lonely it can get. Makes you think how you would prepare yourself if the unthinkable ...

I did the same project 2 years ago. I recommend you use a high temp silicone based sealant. I used Permatex Ultra Copper Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker. My thoughts were not so much sealing the threads but being able to dis-assemble the mess when I need to in the future. You can purch...

Definitely heavy gloves. I use a kitchen scour pad. The critters come off pretty easily and I find it cleans better than the scraper.

Don't fret yet. I was in the same situation as yourself. Last year I pulled the sender, cleaned it out and put it back. Motored just about the whole way to Block Island without a hitch. One week later the damn siren would not go off. Cleaned it again and again. This spring I bought a new oil pressur...

Tiller cover; vertical; velcro strapped to coiled mainsheet hanging from boom bail. Yes--sounds complicated, but I like the velcro strap.

John, I'm glad you got the pictures posted! It really helps to get a visual so everyone can give their assessment. Not too bad, but there may be a bigger problem. From the pics it seems like there a 2 plates involved. You obviously have an active leak indicated by the rust run from the right side ba...

Here is a link from our Webmaster on how to post pictures. http://www.capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=14638 Without seeing the extent of the corrosion, my first inclination would be to remove and replace with a new bracket. Luckily the hardest part will be to remove the plate. Putting it back sho...

I also had a very noticeable mustache after towing our dinghy this past weekend. I also had a full crew which had the stern squatting a bit. The exhaust pipe was submerged at times which probably added to the buildup. I guess the motor may have been overloaded with the towing and the additional crew...
