Cleaning Stainless

All cleaning suggestions sound viable. I use either Neverdull or McGuires plain old one step cleaner wax - I think its No. 50 - works great on mild surface rust stains. I keep after the rails on a fairly regular basis. Now - old pick-um-up trucks - my 51 Chevy was something else. Black primer, five ...

Sorry I can't help - but just to let you know, I still use the CNG setup the boat came with. Good luck.

Honey Teak and Varnish

I used Honey Teak on the exterior teak of my Cape Dory 31 eight seasons ago. I am in the process of stripping the teak to bare wood this spring and will replace with phenolic resin varnish this year. Here is a mixed bag of observations. • The Honey Teak held up well even though I ignored the mainten...

Off the Map

Cape Dory As Desert Movie Star: Seen the film "Off the Map"? Features a Cape Dory, looks like maybe a 25 ft, not sure. Fair warning, the film takes place in somewhere near Taos, desert southwest miles from navigable water - but there it is, big as life a Cape Dory in the New Mexico desert ...

I've found that Cadet Grey looks good and if it fades, you basically can't notice it. Dark brown on boats is..........

Sail Covers - Camparing Quotes

I need to replace the mail sail and working jib sail covers for my CD31. 10 years have gone by, the sail covers are in faded tatters. I received a local loft quote for about $500 for a new mainsail cover. Its for a cover made of Sunbrella, Cadet Grey (a standard color) nothing fancy. Has anyone been...

Upwind Performance

How to Improve “Pointing Ability” Of Larger Cape Dory Sailboats? Sailing a Cape Dory 31 I’m always impressed by the boatspeed on a close reach or footing. Bear up to close-hauled, truly beating at the closest point possible, genoa or jib sheets hauled tight, main sheeted-in with shape adjustments fo...

Just A Thought

Some great ideas in the helpful posts in this string, but here’s a short personal reminiscence that seems appropriate for the Cape Dory Message Board. My “first” Cape Dory was a Cape Dory 10 that my brother and I purchased with the proceeds from the sale of our McCulloch racing engine powered go-kar...

CD 31 Re-powering

Mike: I went with the recommendation of the yard doing the work. They specialize in Westerbeke/Universal installations and it was the closest to a "swap-out". The engine cost was $7500. I had looked into Yanmars (I had a dependable but very rough and noisy 2 cylinder on a Tartan 28) and re...

CD 31 Re-powering

CD31 Re-powering July 2005 This is a description of some lessons learned during motor propulsion re-fit/re-power job done by a competent yard on a 21 year old, Cape Dory 31. This was prepared for the boat’s maintenance file but may be of some interest to those searching this subject for re-powering ...

Just A Re-power

Just a note on a re-power job: I'm about to have a Universal M25 swapped out for a M25xpb. I'll report on the eventual saga but the yard commissioned for this has taken a very matter-of-fact view, auxiliary sail re-power work is their stock in trade. Its a straight swap out all controls, mounts and ...
