Can someone give me the model number for a raw water pump for the Universal model 18? I believe it's an Oberdorfer pump.
Thanks Bruce

Replacing Hiller Range with Origo 6000
It's time to replace the cook stove on Malinche my CD 30. I've been using a two burner Hiller Range with oven. Reading the archives I find posts from sailors who have installed the 6000 on CD 33s. I'm not sure what stoves they were replacing. I'm under the impression that a lot of CDs shipped with H...

Re: LOA vs. LOD
You always have to be careful with LOA specs. Traditionally a bowsprit is considered a spar. Cape Dory always followed that tradition.

Re: Difficulty cranking engine
Thanks Guys there's some good stuff here: It's perhaps a little early to say I've solved the problem but for the moment it's working fine. I've said that before. I went out to the boat last week with a couple of days to work on the problem and started with cleaning all the contacts. I pulled the alt...

Re: Gusher Bilge Pump
I have no idea how much water the sump holds. I wouldn't worry about draining it mid season, just get it outbefore it freezes.

Re: Gusher Bilge Pump
John: I no longer own Sostenuto so a picture is out of the question. It's kind of hard to describe but I'll give it a try. The deep sump in the bilge is located as you said aft of the ice box. You can get to it from the cockpit lockers. As you look into the space below the cockpit you will see the s...

Re: Gusher Bilge Pump
John: Here is a comment I made several years ago on a similar topic. I do not have an automatic bilge pump. I do have manual pump permanently installed in the cockpit. The following is excerpted from my posting of 4/18/2000: " The bilge has a sump. It is below and just aft of the icebox. In the...

Thanks Paul:
I've been thinking along those lines and am happy to know they worked for you. I will review Mr. Calder's book, I believe I have a copy.

Difficulty cranking engine
Malinche is CD 30 #326 (1984) with a Universal model 18 engine. Ever since I bought the boat, about ten years ago now, I have had difficulty cranking the engine. I activate the glow plugs for 20 to 30 seconds push the starter and get an unsatisfying click. After several clicks the engine almost alwa...

Re: Old CD-25 with unusual layout & motor well?
My dad had a 73 cd25 with that lazerette configuration. The worst thing about it is that the hole scoop the water, giving a whole new meaning to the term sugar scoop stern. my dad carved a couple of inserts out of stock 2 x 6 that fit around the lower end of the outboard. He did not try to make them...

Re: Glow Plug / Engine
When you press the button send juice to the glow plugs you should see the volt meter needle move. If it does not then electricity is not getting to the plugs. Am I to understand that the motor hasn't been used it 2 years? Have bled the fuel line? Are both of the fuel filters good? Check both the fue...

Re: Cape Dory 25 Engine Cover / Solar Panel platform
I'm not going to be able to answer your question, since I no longer sail a CD25. I would advise you to give the year of you 25. I'm pretty sure that the older 25s had smaller lazerette covers. My Dad had a 73 model, I had a 77 model mine had a bigger cover.

Re: Harken Traveler directly on a CD30?
I agonized over the problem of getting a functional traveler on Malinche (CD 30 #326). I considered most of stuff discussed here, finally in frustration I did a very simple thing. I bought of the shelf in my favorite marina two small double cheek blocks. I got two single blocks with beckets to match...
