Lavac Heads in CD36 and similar

To avoid hijacking Troy's thread, I'll ask this separately...I noticed Lee's mention of having installed a Lavac in a CD36. (Phoenix has the original layout with the smaller head and the mast in the saloon.) For Lee (tmsc) and anyone else who has done this...do you have pictures of the installation ...

All else being equal (of course it never is), with unlimited sea room, constant wind speed and direction, no current, start directly down wind of destination, etc: Sail in one direction until you can lay the mark, then tack. A single tack is more efficient, as each tack loses time. The distance sail...

Russell, I use 50' of 5/16 HT chain and 150' of 5/8 nylon 3-strand. For anchoring on short scope (where the line portion remains in the locker) I use a 1/2" snubber...more stretch with the lighter but shorter line.

Since the pulls on CD's are circular (there are others available in rectangular mounts), it would be very simple to enlarge the opening with a 1-5/8" forstner bit in a drill press. These bits operate like planes (shaving off thin slices of wood) and do not require an intact surface...overlappin...

bearing alignment

Check the bearing alignment instructions on page 5-12 of the manual. In brief, you'll need a target at about 2-3 miles that you can line up on your bow for zero relative bearing. You then measure the bearing to the target with the EBL; open setup mode (press MENU and GUARD at the same time), select ...

Morey's Red Grease...but permanent? I'd rather not...

Troy, Based on several recommendations on this board, I switched from the Spartan grease to Morey's Red (at your friendly Napa auto parts, for one source). Cheap (still working on a five-year or so old tube that's half full); no weeping yet; no wear on the seacocks (that were not in the best of shap...

second that...

Sounds like a super idea! More info, please!

Pictures would be great, along with make/model of the brackets and slides.

How do you secure the panel/drawer slides from sliding, once elevated into position "balanced" on the rail (e.g., while tilting toward the sun?)

Bob Emmons did this a year ago and wrote it up for the Masthead...check the Sep/Oct 2007 issue.

When he wrote the article he'd been using the boat for about 4 months since redoing the decks and was very satisfied. Long-term is of course another question but his initial impressions were very good.

Like all else on a boat, compromise is involved. Phoenix is equipped with a hard-top dodger (Wavestopper) and a bimini. The bimini is slotted aft to accommodate the backstay, and extends to about 15-18" aft of the dodger. The front edge of the bimini is about 6" higher than the rear edge o...

Another?

When we got her, Phoenix's canvas was Walnut Brown and I'm pretty sure it was original. It's a bit darker than True Brown with black "tweed" threads.

Don't plug the drain...

...add a trap instead. Water in the trap will prevent the cold air from draining out, and you'll still have the drain.

More important for ice box users than refrigeration; in the latter case, a plug might be appropriate.

Re: Troy's windlass in progress

Troy (and others who've installed a windlass on the CD36), How thick is the deck around the cleats? Lewmar says the V2/V3 is good for up to 2-1/4" with the standard kit. Looks like a 2" or so pad is needed to get the windlass even with the bow platform, so a special order looks to be neede...
