Re: CD27 Mast Support Location

Thanks Steve. To be clear, my concern is not getting through it, but rather that I have no idea how beefy it is and didn’t want to do anything that might compromise its structural integrity. So if drill to the left or the right of the raised area where the mast step sits, I likely won’t hit it at al...

CD27 Mast Support Location

Can someone tell me where the mast support is located on a CD27? I want to core a new hole in the deck for wiring and would like to avoid this.

Thanks,
Jim

Re: CD30 Main 2nd Reef

Hi Jeff:

The cheek block needs to be positioned slightly aft of the reef clew to pull the sail both down and aft (i.e. to act as an outhaul).

Jim

Re: Additional Mast Cleats?

I wouldn't double up any lines except maybe on a temporary basis. I think any permanent lines should have a dedicated cleat. Mine are stacked one above the other on the port and starboard sides of the mast, slightly offset, so the lines running to the lower cleats run clear of those above. Wing &...

Schaefer 35-03

I replaced mine last season with a Schaefer 35-03: http://schaeferhardware.com//SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=326 . Schaefer also makes this as a 3:1 (35-01), but I think you will want the added mechanical advantage of a 4:1 vang. Additionally they make a lighter weight units they marketed for boats ...

Not necessary to add a track and car system...

I don't think it's necessary to add a track and car system if you switch to a fully battened main AS LONG AS there are no other pre-existing problems raising/dropping your main that you are looking to correct. One caveat to this might be if you're switching to some stiffer high-tech sailcloth (e.g. ...

I don't have a metal strip on my rub-rails either. If the wood looks great after 30 years, why are you thinking of "protecting" it at this point?

Ditto

Hi Robert: I’m going to echo what others have said. I have a CD-27 that I single-hand ~90% of the time. I don’t have self-tailing winches and I have never missed them. If I HAD to replace the winches, I would probably put self-tailers on, but there’s no way I replace them for the sole purpose ...

Symmetrical

Hi Rusty:

There was a Cape Dory 28 by the name of Windigo in Manitowoc, WI, that was for sale last year. I am guessing this is the same boat? Where is it's new home port?

Regarding your spinnaker, if there is a red and a green edge, then it's a symmetrical.

I rewired the mast on my 1982 CD27 last year and had difficulty removing the aluminum fixture on mast. I gave the screw a daily dose of "AeroKroil" after the third (or fourth?) day it finally let loose. Probably the first time it had been off since new. Ancor (Marinco) makes four conductor...

Weiman Lemon Oil

I use Weiman Lemon Oil. It contains no silicone or wax and has a sun screen component. It's easy to apply, which is good since it needs to be done several times a season to keep up the look.

Garmin GPSmap 478 GPS

I can also recommend the discontinued Garmin GPSmap 478 GPS. I have two of these. I liked the first one enough that I bought a second unit two seasons ago at a DEEP discount after they were discontinued. I mount one in the cockpit while underway and the other is mounted in the cabin as a backup. The...

I no longer use boots on my spreaders. My spreader tips are nicely rounded - there's nothing to catch or snag. It's quicker to rig, easier to inspect and I think it looks better.

Mast "Too Long"?

Hi Rollo:

I believe the stated 5,300 pound displacement is for the model without the diesel inboard.

With regards to the mast being “too longâ€
