Re: CD330 ballast
To right a list in my 28, Cape Dory added a battery shelf on the starboard side and encapsulated about 70 lbs of lead into the base. I also found six lead bricks (they look like bricks and were painted red), under the starboard settee. I subsequently moved the fuel tank from port to starboard and pl...

KiwiGrip
I applied KiwiGrip to the cabin top. There was a slight chance of rain which was worrisome, but otherwise the conditions were good with overcast skies, 74°F and 50% RH. White KiwiGrip doesn't have much contrast, when first applied. It becomes off-white over time as can be seen on the main deck in t...

Re: "Leoma" Projects
Whenever I get in some weather I always find lots of rust chips. Not easy to judge from one picture, however it doesn't appear that the thickness of the plate in the picture has been too compromised. If it is mostly surface rust and the plate is not brittle around the bolts or rebar, then the mizze...

Re: The Tryanny of the Temporary
On a side note... with the typical failure of all things "new"... do you ever wonder if the bloody airbag will deploy erroneously? I sure as hell do... but then I've been working as a programmer for far more years than I like and I've seen way more 'bad' code than makes me comfortable... ...

Re: The Tryanny of the Temporary
Why do these miracles of modern convince have such a short life span? There are many examples of complex products that are far better, reliable and affordable in real dollars (hours we need to work in order to purchase them) than their earlier iterations. When I was a kid, my Dad had "simple&q...

New Midship Bomar Hatch
`The Boat` never had a midship hatch, only this piece of plastic. A few years ago, I purchased a used Bomar cast hatch on ebay and the time has arrived for installation. https://uniim1.shutterfly.com/ng/services/mediarender/THISLIFE/009011365494/media/74049753383/large/1535403135/enhance There were...

I've had no interference with Marine Grade LED Lights from MarineBeam, https://store.marinebeam.com/ . See their article on EMI at: https://store.marinebeam.com/controlling-emi-1/ I started purchasing from MarineBeam after reading posts from Maine Sail like this one, https://www.sailnet.com/forums/g...

JD, there is a used Monitor Wind Vane for sale in Marina Del Rey that came off a 30' boat.
Might be a good fit for you.

Bomar Hatch Finish
The paint on this hatch was in poor condition and I decided to stripped it.
Beyond aesthetics, is there any reason to paint it?

Re: Installing a Bronze Mushroom Vent
The cowls were discarded and the holes were filled in and glassed over. I speculate that a small diesel can suck in sufficient air from the cabin (via the bilge and other holes in the bulkhead), which also acts to cool the compartment. Whatever escapes the internal combustion and does not get expell...

Re: Installing a Bronze Mushroom Vent
FWIW, the stern cowls were glassed over on the FeNIX (a CD28) when it circumnavigated.
As such the boat was more seaworthy and it is doubtful that this modification accelerated the aging of mechanical components.
