Cabin Sole Refinishing

I'd like to refinish the cabin sole on my '82 CD 28. I've read a number of articles, books, and the archives but am not sure what finish was applied by the factory. Since it's a thin veneer would sanding alone prep it for the varnish I intend to use?
Thanks for any thoughts and guidance.

Re: Water Tanks

David,
That's an excellent idea...I wish I had an extra seacock. Let me know if you'll be sailing north this summer.

Re: Water Tanks

Thanks for all the replies. This board amazes me! A couple things I didn't mention: The original tanks have capped ends-forward side of the tank. When attempting to check them out last season, my hand bumped one of these and it easily broke away from the tank. (I'd read where this could be due to pi...

Water Tanks

If spring ever returns to the north-I'd like to replace my fresh water tanks. I've searched the posts on this topic and feel that replacement is the way to go. I know Ronco makes a size that others have used on their 28 but even those get pricey w/shipping added in. What about the tanks from W. Mari...

Re: spiders a problem?

Hi Randy,
Thanks for posting this information. I can't wait to try the product and end my sport of "spider over the side" and clean-up under the dodger routine!
Come-on spring!

Re: Bottom & Boot Top Paint

Keith, Micron Extra comes in brown although a bit pricey. So far, I've gotten two seasons out of it and may even get a third. I'm in fresh water that may be a bit easier on it. I've used both Epifanes and Rust-Oleum for the boot top. The Rust-Oleum is available at Home Depot and quite inexpensive. C...

Re: Replacing Depth Sounder

Thanks for your thoughts and 1st hand experience with the Hawkeye. That helps me eliminate one approach. I'm beginning to think that maybe a thru-hull transducer is the preferred way to go. I'd like to hear how the Tack-Tick system works out for you.

Replacing Depth Sounder

Has anyone replaced a Standard Horizon DS 40 depth sounder? With a bad transducer, I've decided to replace the instrument too. The problem I'm faced with is the old unit is only a 2.5" cutout in the cockpit wall. As much as I'd like to buy another Raymarine (I had the ST 40 in my previous boat)...

Owners Poll

Like Neil, I'm the 4th owner of my CD 28, Hull #319.
To add to the discussion, does anyone have any records of what these beauties cost when new?
Merry Christmas and great sailing in 2012!

Star 10 Paint Stripper

Has anyone used the paint stripper Star 10? I'm getting impatient with the Aqua Strip in dealing with the last remaining spots of Cetol. I'm concerned about the effects on gel coat, etc. Thanks for your thoughts.

Seacock Challenge

For the first time, I serviced a seacock (CD 28) and all went well. On my 2nd one (the raw water seacock) I could not put it back together. It would not go in far enough to properly attach the washer on the other side. Has anyone dealt with this? I even tried lapping compound with no improvement. I'...

Hi Doug,
Great to hear you're back in business with another beautiful Cape Dory! Sure hope to see you out there on the water sometime or maybe I'll just pop down to Eldean. Happy Sailing!

MD7A fuel filter

Does anyone have the part # for the engine fuel filter on an MD7A? I'm looking for a source and also a possible cross-reference in case I can avoid the high cost of Volvo parts. Many thanks,

Hi Jeff,

I kept my CD 25 at the Navy Recreation Center, Solomons for many years. I retired 12 years ago (go Navy!) but have fond memories of the facility. It's a bit of a drive for you but the savings may be worth it. Good luck!
