Thanks for the compliments- Cape Dory made great boats. We have really enjoyed Catalpa and will miss her.
John - Fantastic work you did on Far Reach. You really took her to the next level!

Massachusetts to Florida (and back)
We decided to pack up Catalpa (our CD 28) and head south for the winter. We left Massachusetts on September 15th. I've been keeping a daily log of the adventure-

Re: Migrating south - Ct,NY,NJ
Thank you for these great suggestions! I've been studying the ActiveCaptain site for a while and I agree, it is a valuable resource. I am familiar with the Mystic area. If I don't stop over on the way down, I plan to head in there on the way back. After checking this post, I read about Port Washingt...

Migrating south - Ct,NY,NJ
We'll be heading south for the winter in a few more days (weather permitting). We have a CD28 that I have upgraded over the past few years. Doing the trip, will be myself, my wife, and dog. We're going to take the slow road going down there. Probably travel around 40nm (30 to 50) a day. We mostly an...

Re: 1 GM leaking water
Check around the zinc in the heat exchanger. My Beta had a leak this year. I thought the zinc was tight enough when I replaced it. Apparently not. Easiest thing to check 1st.

Re: USCG Vessel registration renewal
Same here. I'm generally somewhat suspicious, but I almost fell for the $70 renewal form (uscgdocumentation.us). Very official looking. $44 dollar charge to pay a $26 dollar bill. Great business to be in.
I didn't see any kind of multi year option on the actual USCG site (uscg.mil).

1986 Universal M18 engine
1986 Universal M18 diesel engine. $600. Removed from my boat last fall. The good- Newer (2yrs)Oberdorfer water pump. Not much rust. Runs. New hoses. Well maintained. The bad - Exhaust manifold works but is cracked. Craig's list add with pictures - http://southcoast.craigslist.org/boa/4573298847.html...

Re: repowering a cd28
Bob - thanks for the prop shaft loan. We have a few boat yards around here. I'm going to ask around 1st to see if I can borrow an old shaft. Neil - Good advise. It's not like we don't get any intense wave action around the canal! I'm going to drop off the exhaust today rather than thinking about it ...

Re: repowering a cd28
Thanks for the tips. Since I fully believe in mocking stuff up I like the idea of adding a steel rod or longer shaft to set up the stern tube. When I built the engine jig to make the beds I added a long 1" dowel to come up with a rough idea of where the shaft and engine were going to go. I'm gu...

repowering a cd28
I'm in the process of installing a new beta 14 diesel in my Cape Dory 28. I know that there are at least a few others that have done the same. While removing the old engine I decided I didn't like my stern tube/ stuffing box arrangement so I've removed all of that for now too. Of course, after exami...

Wanted - exhaust manifold for Universal M18
Looking for an exhaust manifold for a Universal M18.
We talked to Hansen Marine and the Westerbeke/Universal factory but unfortunately they have none and no longer have the mold to recast it.
Any leads for a salvage part would be greatly appreciated.

three strand rope
I've been doing some re-rigging on my CD28 and have been chipping away at it each spring. Last year I replaced the halyards. For this I used Stayset as I felt it was important to have a relatively low stretch line. This year I'm in the process of switching to a roller furling genny and I'd like to r...
