Re: Experience with pre-spliced anchor chain/rode?
I know how to splice 3 strand eye splice, albeit pretty rusty at this point. Nonetheless, I saw where there’s a way to splice directly to the chain, it appeared to involve runnng several feet of line with n the links of chain. I don’t know the process thougj

Re: Cooling system problem - please help!
I have a westerner. Ran into similar problem a few years ago and eventually had to have a mechanic check it out. Turned out heat exchanger needed to be cleaned out.

Re: crushing a Catalina
I had a similar experience 4 or 5 years ago, no pictures! On a Sunday evening I was sailing back into the West River, there were several other boats heading in at the same time, I passed them and they were all over 30' as I recall several were closer to 40'. I'm not a racer and certainly not the mos...

Thanks Tim, actually that's exactly what he proposed, I should have added that.

Re: CD25D bimini
For quite some time, I've wanted to add a Bimini. Don't have head room under boom but talked to a sailmaker about the possibility/feasibility of having 6" to 12" cut off the bottom of the mainsail. He didn't think it would have a serious affect on performance. Im still uncertain though.

Re: Racor vacuum gauge
Steve, I think this last point is a very good one. I filled my tank last year, and checked it recently, it's still 3/4 full. I motor as little as possible but was thinking about crud build up possibility. This thread reminded me that I need to change my filter!

Thanks Jeff, I like that idea and that's another data point in the decision making process.

Re: Stripping Cetol
Thanks Steve, that's what I've done in the past but always worried I might still be getting fiberglass too hot. I'm going to try the masking tape approach with the eyebrows. That's such a narrow surface I'd worry about overheating.

Re: Stripping Cetol
Thanks for the replies. I really like jbenagh's idea of multiple layers of masking tape. In addition, I'll be very cautious. Last spring I repainted the boot stripe. There had been a strip of white tape separating boot stripe. It was old, cracked dirty and generally in appealing. I did use my heat g...

Re: Stripping Cetol
I have what may seem to sound like a question that might have an " intuitively obvious answer to the casual, observer", but erring on the side of caution here goes. Is it safe to apply heat to narrow strips of teak, like eyebrows and rub rails? My concern is overheating the surrounding fibe...

Re: Unanswered varnishing questions
JOHN,
Thanks for the link to Thriftbooks. When I searched I was astounded that the price could be so high, so had looked at various links, but hadn't run across that one.
Just placed an order.

Re: Seacock replacement - brand / model recommendations?
Back on topic... I need to replace the plywood backing plates and plan to either do it myself or have someone else do it this year. The older I get, and that's getting to be quite a bit, I don't relish the idea of contorting myself down into the cockpit lockers. I talked to one guy about doing the j...

Re: Seacock replacement - brand / model recommendations?
This is somewhat off topic. I have the original seacocks on all through hulls, save for one. At some point a direct overboard head discharge was added. It has a Groco valve. Of course sailing in the CHESAPEAKE it's never used. So, I've never lubricated it. Last Spring I serviced all the seacocks but...
