Re: rigging recommendations

I had good luck with Rigging Only in Fairhaven, MA. They replaced what I believed to be the original standing rigging on my Ty DS in two days for less than the cost of the parts from Defender. I think that many others on the board have had similar experiences. They used my existing rigging as patter...

Re: Spring?

It was 56 in Charleston today. Although it was a rented Colgate 26 it was nice to be out on the water in February.

Re: To all the Northeast Brethern

My house is open to the Northeast (Marion, MA) and the winds have been tough - sustained 30 - 40 with repeated gusts to 70. Its hard to say how much snow has fallen - in many places the grass is clear while in others we have drifts more than 8' high. While it is not done it could have been much wors...

Re: air-cooled outboards

The only reason to use two hands in reverse is the Spartan motor mount which tends to lift up if you rev the motor while reversing. I don't think you'll have any issues motoring into a slip provided you go slow. In regard to your transport issue - for $1,000 you could buy a trailer, use it once and ...

Re: air-cooled outboards

Nancy, If you search the archives you will find many posts regarding the choice of OB for a Typhoon with a variety of opinions. I have a Ty DS with a 2hp Honda and am happy with the pairing. I have had the motor for eight years and it has been trouble free despite concerns regarding ethanol in the f...

Re: Update on Your Lehr Outboard Experience?

Like many Typhoon owners I have a Honda 2 hp. I think it is the right mix of power and weight. It has never failed to start over the eight years that I have owned it.

Re: Typhoon Self-tacking Jib

I would like to install a self tending jib on my Ty DS. My motivation is to improve the sheeting angles. I sail in a place with a lot of wind and use a 100% jib. To sail close hauled I have to run the sheets inside the shrouds, to sail off the wind outside. The Hoyt jib boom would be ideal but it is...

Re: Where have you positioned the name decal on your CD Typh

I gave this some thought and tried a few mock-ups on the computer before opting for symmetry. I think it looks best with or without the OB.

Re: My aft is dragging

In a past life I owned a CD 22 that came equipped (by a PO) with 2 - 3 lead bricks in the chain locker. I think that the squatting problem is common to all 22's. I agree with filling the water tank as a low risk first step. I think that it was ~15 gallons which would add 120 pounds up front. Unless ...

Re: Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender sailing question

John, I have a Ty Daysailer, which also does not have a self bailing cockpit - it sits much more deeply than a Weekender with the floor ~12" below the waterline. I have never taken water over the stern and I also sail in Buzzards Bay which can be pretty choppy. Other than a little spray over th...

Re: Cape Dory Typhoon Daysailer

I have an '85 DS. For the most part the sole is pretty solid. There is one area where it slopes up in the back where there is a little bounce (both sides). It is unclear to me if there is core there or if that is the foam flotation that I am feeling. I had a new boom tent/cockpit cover made three ye...
