Re: Typhoon coaming
Unless I had a drill press, I would be inclined to leave well enough alone. I replaced the coamings on my Ty DS 10 years ago and they still have not split. I don't sit/lean on the top of the coamings and I don't sand the teak very often. If I were really concerned about it I would apply a small piec...

Re: Typhoon coaming
I have replaced the coamings on 2 CDs. On my 1982 CD 22 there were dowels installed as you describe about 6" from the aft end - the coamings still split. On my 1985 Ty DS there were no dowels and the coamings did not split. My guess is that the dowels were factory installed - it would be hard t...

Re: Typhoon outboard engine: Mercury 3.5 or Honda 2.3?
You will find lots of opinions. When I found my DS it came with an 8hp which was overkill. I purchased a 2hp Honda 10 years ago and it has been very reliable and offers plenty of power. I have replaced the plug once, the oil every year and the lower unit oil every other year. It never fails to start...

Geico/Seaworthy
I have had a Seaworthy policy on my Typhoon for 10 years. I have never made a claim and never asked anything of them. In return my premium has stayed the same. I received my renewal in the mail today with a 51% premium increase. When I asked why I was told that boat repair costs were going up. Since...

Re: mooring swivels: service life?
I had a consistent problem with my mooring bridles wrapping themselves around and under my mooring ball. I was wary of using a swivel, because it seemed like the weak link with no backup. At the suggestion of someone on this board, I switched from two equal length mooring lines to using one that is ...

Re: Touch UP Paint Typhoon?
Mini Craft in FL sells color matched gel coat in a spray can. I used some about 5 years ago and they were able to match my 1985 CD white. Other than my bad technique it has held up well and looks more and more like the factory every year.

Re: Jib Track and Block Replacement
I grew up on Great Peconic Bay, so I know that a normal afternoon brings 15 - 20 knot breezes, but there has to be more to the story than that. I have the same track and Schaeffer blocks on my Ty and cannot imaging them bending in moderate winds?

Re: Typhoon mast and winches cleaning
I think that the accepted solvent is kerosene (aka paraffin). At least on my Ty winches there are some plastic parts that may be harmed by Acetone. Acetone is also pretty flammable.

Brightsides vs. Kiwi Grip
Five years ago I painted the cockpit of my Ty DS. At the time I was warned by a member of this board that Brightsides did not do well in in a wet environment. Despite the warning, I went ahead, filling the stress cracks, priming 2x and finishing with 2 coats of Brightsides with the non-skid additive...

Re: Typhoon Mainsail
That is a loose footed main. I believe that is pretty much standard on new sails and allows for more control of sail depth. You should be fine.

Re: CD 22
I once had a 22 and it was great for 1 or 2 (maybe 3 if two were kids). I think that 4 would be tough, unless they were really good friends Lack of a self bailing cockpit is a non-issue. I sail in an area with short steep chop and have never taken a wave over the side, some spray yes, but never a wa...

Re: CD 22
If you are looking to daysail with 4+ I think that you should include the Daysailer and Open versions of the Typhoon - both have really large cockpits.

Re: Typhoon with a self-tacking jib?
Alan, I am contemplating the same change, although likely with a different Ty model. I live in an area of consistent good winds (buzzards bay), so a ~100% jib is the right sail almost all the time. My issue is sheeting angles and sail trim. I think that the stock arrangement is designed for either a...

Re: Replacing Halyard sheaves - 1984 Cape Dory Typhoon
While I think that I have a different model Typhoon I had the same problem with 2/4 sheaves frozen. The problem is that the aluminum sheaves corroded reducing the clearance to the stainless plate that separates the main and jib sides. Rather than replace them I removed them when the mast was out and...
