cape horn
Bill was very happy with the Cape Horn. Unfortunately, we didn't have the week's sail, we cut it short because of bad weather and were going to take a week in July, but... We sailed from Chatham to Nantucket the time last June on one tack, with the Cape Horn doing most of the sailnig. Bill liked to ...

1977 CD 28, Hull 120 for Sale. Donate to Mass Maritime?
Has any one ever donated a boat to Mass Maritime? I'm thinking about it at this point. Kudu has been listed for over half a year. Any suggestions on how to sell her? I set the price at $15K at the broker's suggestion. Then lowered it to $10K. Is that too low? Is it just a bad market? Has anyone look...

Bill's Last Sail
Hi: I'm Barbara, BillofCapeCod's wife. Bill evidently posted a lot on this board in the year or so he owned our Cape Dory 28, Kudu (previously Kevin's Celtic Ray). Sadly, Bill passed away on July 27 of a heart infection. Bill was a lifelong sailor. In 1974, we charted a 35-foot Pearson for our honey...

Picture of Reefing before approaching squall line
Here is a picture of Kudu with my wife and I aboard, just coming out of Sesuit Harbor on Cape Cod Bay and heading west toward the canal, being reefed before an approaching squall line. Notice the main has one reef in her but the genoa is still fairly full (about 120% of its 160%) but spilling air. I...

Re: Reefing Signals
Hi, All great posts. I have used these four points for many years to determine whether or not to reef. A single factor should signal you to take in at least one reef. Two or more factors signal you to consider a second reef. 1. Look to windward. Do you see whitecaps? 2. Feel the sailing wind. Are g...

what kind of sailor you and your boat are
As a sailor who sailed a lot 30 years ago and is now getting back into it again, I think much of the answer to your question may lay in what kind of sailor you and your boat are. For example, if you are a young crew and like the feel of a boat on the edge of control, then you would reef far later th...

Check Boat
I reexamined the furling drum. The drum base is attacked directly to the fitting on the deck, with no turnbuckle under or inside the drum. The corking under the bow pulpit is as it was, no apparent increase in the space. Decided to go to a different yard that does a lot of rigging for a tuning/re-ri...

The CDI furler fits over the forestay and doesn't have a turnbuckle of its own. The turnbuckle is under the drum and is hidden when the furler is installed. Remove the pin on the furler so all can slide up to reveal the turnbuckle. Is the lead of the furling line the same as it was last fall? Over-...

Possible Problem - Need Advice
When Kudu was rigged last week, the CDI roller furling was not put back on the boat correctly: it was attached to the deck with just a pin without having a turnbuckle. I am embarrassed to admit I did not notice this until the furling line fouled the first time I attempted to furl the sail back. The ...

Cape Dory 28 Cape Horn Self-Steering Installed - Update
This last week we took Kudu on her maiden voyage with the Cape Horn Self-Steering. First the "bad" news, let me note that while using "Nelson", the name we have given our Cape Horn, is not as simple as I indicated in my first posting. For example, if you wish to tack, you do turn...

One Issue with the CD-28 Installation
One issue with CD-28 installation is the limited room on the cockpit aft bulkhead because of the engine instrument panel as well as the limited space between the hull and cockpit bulkhead. So the installation is a rather tight fit with little margin for error. To accommodate this, the hole in the hu...

Re: Questions?
That is a really clean installation. Simplicity itself. How do you raise the teak paddle from the water? Does having it in the water when the wind vane is not in use affect the steering ability of the boat? Thanks Boyd s/v Tern CD30 MkII Fort Lauderdale, Fla. There is a fail-safe line with which yo...

Installation Pictures
Please post some pictures! I am truly impressed and would like to see how it looks. If you would like, email me the pictures and I will be happy to post them for you. Thanks, -michael These pictures were taken by Éric Sicotte of Cape Horn right after installation. The gear is slightly off center, ...
