Hi, I, too, have the Garmin, the 76CSx model, which has a compass in addition to GPS. I'm not that thrilled with the compass part for marine use, however, but do use it hunting with a topo map loaded. It's a good unit. Steve has a good point about a small, mounted, depth finder. Also about putting i...

Hey, Ron, very nice. Enjoyed the slide show. What year is your CD27? Thanks, Terry

Got it! 1979. Just thought of the registry. Now you've got me thinking about this one. How much longer will you have her in the water?

Replacing old Evinrude with Tohatsu 6 SailPro

This discussion is very interesting. I've been thinking for some time of replacing my 1977 Evinrude 6hp that is on Cassandra (CD25). I've chosen the Tohatsu 6hp SailPro, which has a 8.375" Dia. X 6.0" Pitch prop. It also has a 25" shaft and installed charging circuit. I assumed this &...

I just learned about the Sail Warehouse. Should you decide a DIY approach isn't for you, this may work. While you can order custom, some sails are in-stock and reasonably priced, which is to say they won't cost both an arm and a leg. http://thesailwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/web_store.cgi?page=storeframe....

There's an interesting article in this month's Good Old Boat magazine on a home brew vent made from PVC and charcoal filtering. Not stainless or brass, but I suppose it could be gold-leafed. I always thought a real marine head would be nice, and eliminate hauling the portahead to the marina bathroom...

Crocks, River Shoes, & Seven7 Jean Co.

Interesting post. I like hearing what others do/wear/enjoy. Down here in Georgia, some folks wear crocks. I don't care for how my feet slip inside them, but am told they grip the deck well. They do keep feet cool, and don't absorb water. Once and a while I wear Kamik river shoes, especially during d...

Kevin & Roy RE: Bimini

Kevin, after some thought, I'm inclined to go with a standard-style, two-bow bimini from American Marine. The price isn't too bad, either. See them at: (http://www.americanmarineind.com/orderPage.htm) I measured for a six-footer at 42" high, which would give boom clearance without raising it. I...

Lost my head.

Well, I had an interesting sail yesterday. I left the marina with a light breeze, hoisted the main, and began to unfurl the genoa. Just as it was fully unfurled, it fell to the foredeck. Oh, great. Okay, I'd intended to replace the halyard, but hadn't got to it. I went forward, dowst the main, and p...

What I've Learned So Far

Thanks to all who've responded with insights. I also did a search of previous postings, which was valuable. What I've learned so far is that there are a lot of great solutions to putting bit of shade over my head, each with some strong points and some compromising. I didn't want to cut the sail and ...

I've a 1977 6hp--very small motor--so it does turn a bit in the well. I'm dreaming of a Honda 9.9 with electric start and alternator and remote control. Don't figure it will even fit without a hole in the cover. As for handling, I generally only need to motor in reverse when leaving the slip. The do...

John, I agree with Bruce, but will clarify that response making headway needs some water running around the rudder. Making sternway, sharp to starboard is not as bad as port- a result of prop rotation. My 1977 CD-25 is original, but has some room to turn the motor slightly--just enough to really mak...

Bimini Suggestions for CD-25

Hi all,

Any advice on buying and installing a bimini on Cassandra, my 1977 CD-25.

Thanks in advance. Terry
