single handing

+I single-handed Grendel all the time. The key is to standardize on the way you do things, Also, think before you do.

One of the advantages of single handing is that you always know the cause of your problems!

Rig jacklines and use them.

You'll be fine.

My Approach

Most Cape Dory's came with brown or red bottoms, I think. I use blue ablative to contrast. with the brown. When the brown shows through or the blue looks patchy, I recover it. The only part I paint every year is near the waterline. Remember, the ablative paint is supposed to wear away. If the film l...

Nice Area?

Actual if you have time on your hands, How about: Point Judith RI or Newport as a base. Close to the Cape, Block is nearby. Buzzards Bay is next door. In the other direction are Long Island, Shelter Island, and Connecticut, "The Coast of Summer" is a book about sailing the area. you might ...

Saturday.

Bear with me. A geneticist was raising porpoises that were long-lived- indeed after investigating, he found that they were immortal. He fed them seagulls. One day an old, very conservative , lion escaped from the nearby zoo. The lion found his way to the marina where the seaguls were penned, at the ...

Local Knowledge wins every time

I'll bet the skipper had watched the waves over many previous storms and knew their pattern. So he surfed in under power. He probably had done it before. The yacht looked fairly modern - not like one of our seakindly Cape Dories. He could have clawed offshore in one of our boats and hove to. But I g...

Head Hose vs PVC

I'd think that PVC would pose problems because of its ridgidity.

Sailboats have a lot of vibration. I'd worry about fatigue cracking.

X-ray?

AS the owner of a CD36 with coated, probably original lifelines, I wonder if it would be possible to get the lifelines x-rayed? coil the line on a piece of Film, expose, and - you could peek below the surface.

I wonder how much this would cost?

Non-Event

We keep Yankee Dory in Pine Island Bay, Groton CT. I paid close attention to the forecast track including wind probabilities, which were for a less than 20 pct chance of >50kt winds. I took down the jib and staysail. Doubled up a couple of spring lines. I looked last night at the New London Ledge Li...

HF Free to a good home.

We replaced the Groco HF with a Raritan atlantes Raw Water electric flush toilet in our cape dory 36. The head is free to a good home. It does need a new seat.

Toilet is in Wallingford CT.

Things to think about. 25D vs bigger boat.

Basically the 25D is a great boat for a cruising couple, as long as they do not want to, ahem, cuddle a lot below. You may find yourselves sleeping separately more often than you'd like, Remember, berths are limited to the settees or the quarter berth. Technically, the 25D starboard settee does expa...

iF iT AINT BROKE......

I'd be leery of doing this, unless the turnbuckle threads were really in danger of unscrewing, for fear of modifying the rig geometry. Why not just wait untill the shrouds are replaced in 10 yers or so?

Single handing a 36.

Single handing a 36 is certainly possible. You just have to plan ahead and arrange things so you can do as much as possible from the cockpit. If your crew goes below, you ARE single handing, you know.. Slocum's SPRAY was in th same size range as the CD36. ( roughly!) ________ FERRARI TIPO 500 SPECIF...

I've used my GPSMap 76 for a number of years. For me the primary utility is the ability to pick a waypoint on the crude base map and "Go To" it. If you like paper charts it's all you really need.
