Mast step gasket

This is a new one on me because I've removed the mast and all associated hardware, but I never saw any kind of gasket. What is it needed for? Where does it go?

What is a yacht?

I grew up in the Virgin Islands, and I've always enjoyed the idioms of Calypso. For example, film is not developed, it is "washed" and a homosexual is an "anti-man". A West Indian once defined the difference between a sailboat and a yacht for me thusly: A sailboat carries stone b...

I would be concerned about putting batteries in the bilge because of the propensity for flooding which could cause shorts, and the accumulation of explosive gases in a poorly ventilated and confined area during the charge/discharge cycle. Even more worrisome is that with lead acid batteries, not onl...

Re: Putting it back togeather (sic)

If your ports are like mine, the hinge pins do not screw in... they are rolled ss pins that are pressed in. You can tap them out with a thin punch and a hammer. That worked for me. Stan CD25 #794 Ft. Hi Jim; To quote Casey, p. 458: "... a drop greater than 3% is not allowed (by American Boat and Yacht Council standards) for essential electrical items such as bilge blowers, running lights, and navigation equipment. While some items, such as cabin lights can tolerate lower voltage, it is almo...

CD 25 Wiring

Thanks for the input Joel and Dick. The table I am relying on for wire sizing is based on a 3% (0.36v) voltage drop, as required by the ABYC. To run 2 amps from the control panel, 10 feet to the mast and 27 feet up the mast, requires 12 AWG wire. This admittedly seems like overkill, but I'm going by...

Electrical System... inadequate wiring?

Now that my CD 25 (#794) is stripped, I am beginning the restoration by updating the 12 volt electrical system. I was intending to reuse the original wiring for the existing circuits (cabin lights, running lights, etc.) since they are imbedded, and run new wiring for those circuits I plan to add. Ho...

Bronze Restoration

I've had some success, using mild abrasive wheels by 3M which are commonly available in several grits (Wal-Mart, e.g.). They look like a loofa on steroids. You can use them with a drill, but it's best if the drill is stationary, with either a drill press, or a drill clamped to your workbench. It lea...

Intermittent Cooling

I can't speak specifically about the Honda, but all the outboards I know of house the impeller pump inside the lower unit. The ease of repair depends on your ability, but it's generally easier to get it apart than to get it back together because the shift rod, water tube, and driveshaft, all have to...

Polyurethane sealant

I am restoring a Cape Dory 25, #794, built in 1981. http://members.aol.com/sfreihofer/homepage.html. I will be using a polyurethane sealant (like Life Caulk) for bedding hardware, but as with all things nautical, the price is daunting. I also belong to a personal submarine mail-list, PSUBS.ORG. Ther...

Galley sink faucet issues

FWIW I would use silicone grease. It is not petroleum based. It is non-toxic, and used to lubricate food processing equipment. We used silicon grease when rebuilding scuba regulators because it holds up under pressure, won't wash off with water, and is biologically inert. Whenever I lubricate O-ring...

Portlight gasket dimension

For anyone who needs to know, the gasket for the Spartan bronze portlight is 34 1/2 inches. This is the long dimension for cutting the 1/2 inch neoprene cord at a 45 degree angle (point to point). You can do all six portlights with 20 feet of cord. Use contact cement to mount it in the groove. Stan
