Rustolium
I am useing Bildgecoat on our CD-30 but I believe it only comes in two colors. There is grey and white. Cape Dory used a kind of pink I am not trying to match. I figured a boat with an inboard might benifit from a paint formulated for oil resistance. In the Typhoon I went cheap and easy. Rustolium H...

Plastic
I had the original plastic ports and could not see spending the money on bronze. I pulled them out, cleaned em up and painted them with a bronze colored rustolium. I then cut out new lexan and bedded it into the port with something sticky. There is no retainer only glazing like on older house sash. ...

There is no perfect
I wish I knew what to suggest. We had one of those nifty space saving rope ladders with plastic rungs on the Typhoon. I found it okay but other menbers of the crew complained a great deal in some proportion to their breast size. Stern ladders seem very popular but I do not like the way they cover th...

CD-14 on E-bay
Was brousing about and typed in Cape Dory. It produced a nice original CD-14 with trailer. Bidding still has 6 days to go. Good luck if you are interested, Steve.

buffing bronze
You could go crazy and buff them. I could not help myself on the builders plate and the handle on the head seacock. I am resisting messing with anything else. A wire brush will take off lots of heavy stuff on really grubby pieces. I hope time solves any issues with your winches, Steve.

Missory loves company/scrape it
I am currently scraping the entire bottom of a CD-30. I have similar crazing in previous layers of paint that had been painted over for years. There are many areas where the paint had chipped off down to bare glass and then been painted again. I know I could just scrape off the lose areas and paint ...

Drill away
If drilling a few drain holes seems like a good idea and it does. Then you should not let fear of drilling right through your boat stand in the way. Our boats are pretty strong with thick hulls. You should be able to feel the drill push through the liner into at least a small void before you contact...

Take it off
The combing comes off very easily. There are screws along the cockpit untill you get to the lockers then there are 3 machine screws with nuts on the inside. The nuts are easy to reach inside the locker. The only other fasteners are 3 large screws inside the cabin that go through to the front of the ...

One little hint
Don't pull all the seacock barrels at once mark them with duct tape wrapped around the handles and label each one with a marker. I did this and brought them home to wash in a bucket of hot deturgent and then planned to clean them up reallly good. This was planned to save time at the boat and do a be...

Sloppy srews
A sloppy screw is not really a big problem. If they are truely too short to start with you could replace them with longer ones of the same size. Size being #6 or #8 or whatever. Just going to longer screws will not greatly improve your situation. If the shorter screws stripped their holes you will o...

Ty trim
Tom, what you are missing is a piece of 1/2" aluminium trim that covers the seam between wood and glass on the transom. It is originally aluminium on all the Tys I have seen but if you are replacing it I would definitly go with bronze/brass. You can order it from Jamestown distributors in RI. Y...

Laminate
I believe Mitchell meant to say you want a saber saw blade that cuts on the down stroke to prevent chipping. putting adheasive tape on the area that you intend to cut helps too. You can sand and glue over existing formica if it is glued down well. It will leave you with a double brown edge where the...

The Rose
I know the Rose from a slightly different perspective. At the launching of the Amistad she was moored in the Mystic River. It was an early spring launch so there were very few large boats but hundereds of assorted small craft in the harbor. We were amongst them and in looking for a good vantage poin...

You need a good hose job
When I had my boat surveyed the surveyer recomended I change the sanitary hoses. I have been putting it off till I got a better price on hose. Well I went to the Defender warehouse sale and I saw a lot of folks with rolls of white hose in their carts so we are not alone. I understand that in time th...
