Re: Beautiful Pictures of a Cape Dory 22, CD22 - Salvagable?
Be prepared to spend a LOT of time and money. Lots of folks are focused on the standing rigging and yes it should be changed. That is relatively cheap and easy. You should do the lifeline at the same time. I would also plan on all new running rigging and the sails may not be too great either. You co...

Re: Removing Chrome from Lewmar 30 Winches
Putting chrome over bronze, seems like painting a really nice piece of wood. Those are not polished. If they were, they would be shiny enough to see your reflection.
Those stripped winches look beautiful.

Catching rain
Has anyone come up with a good way to collect rain? I would want to put it in 5 gal containers and then dump into my tanks. Seems like it might be a sewing project.

Re: Teak alternative for cabin top "eyebrow" strips
You can buy Mahogany decking from a decent lumber yard. The stuff comes in 5/4 X 6 as well as some other sizes, if you order it. I have found it to be very straight gained and in lengths up to 18'. Ipe and some others are all great teak substitutes. The mahogany is a bit more coarse grained than tea...

Re: Zinc Chromate Paint and Barnacles 2022 results
The Petit and Rustolium products are the same thing. If you are not having good results with Rustolium, spending more money for a different label will not provide better results. I have been using Rustolium for a number of years. It is not going to stop all growth but it seems to work as well as any...

Re: Beware the North Atlantic in December
Here is another one. https://news.yahoo.com/two-men-sailboat-vanished-open-090102252.html I left a year ago, today for my trip from Noank to the USVI. Things can get very nasty out there, this time of year. I did not have an entirely pleasant voyage but was better prepared than they seemed to have b...

Re: Defender’s Warehouse update
Glad I got to experience the glory days of Defender. First time I walked into that store; I was completely overwhelmed. Always loved to look through the discounted area and scored about a six year supply of purple bottom paint, at an exceptionally good price, one time. I have spent a lot of money in...

Re: CD 25D bilge pump
So glad you took action and made some changes. The set up in either one of those pictures is far better than the original situation. I might note that the vented loop is still important, even if you run the hose up high. On my first Bermuda trip, I had installed a new high capacity, electric bilge p...

Re: CD 25D bilge pump
I am sorry but there is so much wrong with this installation, that I need to make sure it is changed, and no one uses it as an inspiration. Some day that will sink your boat. If you are on a port tack and something shifts in that locker it will break off the plastic fitting. The vented loop is fine,...

Re: Harken winch #8
I'm sorry, I didn't see, in the header, that was a number 8.
Still some more details might help. Is it self tailing? I don't need another winch but it might help you sell it to someone else.

Re: How to keep varnish from peeling at edge of toe rail?
The problem is the water getting under the teak and then lifting the finish. Once you strip with a heat gun and build up another finish, it should look fantastic, until it happens again. You need to keep the water from getting under there. Brain gave you great advise except that I would not use epox...

Re: UV Protection for Genoa
I had it done on my old Yankee, a few years back. I think it was about half the cost of a new sail. I now have a new sail. I probably would have been better off not getting the strip replaced. If you decide to go that way, you might be able to save yourself some money by removing the old strip, your...

Re: Leoma update 9/11/22
Raven has the same chocks as your boat. I use them all the time for towing a dink but found the bridle would occasionally pop out and rub on the tariff rail. I solved this issue by putting a short piece of, brass, half oval behind the cleat so the line will not rub on the wood. When at a dock, that ...
