SunShine to Cebu

Hi All, SunShine and I depart for Cebu tomorrow AM, Thursday the 12th. I expect abot a 25 day passage cause its 2900 miles. It has been a pleasant stay here in Majuro. But the rainy season has started. There has often been strong trades as well. The cruisers here have been welcoming and helpful. I m...

SunShine in Majuro

Hi all, Since it is now 2011 and I am in two new hemispheres I decided to start a new thread. Here I sit, gentlely rolling along on Monday April 25th. At least I think its the 25th. I originally planned to sail due north after clearing Samoa's west end. The wind however decided to blow from the NE. ...

SunShine will be leaving the Island

Hi all, I've spent too many months and way too much money on my unexpectedly long stay here in American Samoa. It is now time to go after dealing with a long series of equipment failures. Samoa is not a bad place to stay. Regardless of what some report I think it is a very worthwhile stopping point....

Glug...Glug

Hi all, The tsunami was supposed to hit at 4am FRI my time here in AS. I didn't notice anything at the time 'cause I was asleep. Interestingly a couple of secondary surges did come by at around 10am FRI while I was standing aboard SunShine at the dock talking to some other cruisers. Very bizarre to ...

Hi all,

PO = previous owner

New rudder worked great. Being partially balanced meant it was easy to steer with one finger.

Still out there somewhere in the gulf with new owner.

Take care,
Fred

Hi D&H, I suspect that your question is in regard to the lower gudgeon casting that holds the rudder at the bottom of the keel. The pin at the bottom of the rudder on my 28 was 1" SS about 6"~8" long. It was inserted into the bottom of the rudder and was free. After I removed the ...

Hi all, While on Fenix I met one boat named Quest. He like me was a single hander on a WS32. Met him here in AS in'06. During his first circumnavigation, not all solo, he went the Suez/Med route. He had the "normal" haggle/hassle problems with fuel and paperwork in that area of the world. ...

Hi all, I prefer the SS forged "T" ends with strap toggles on forged bronze bodies. No gauling that way. But to help prevent gauling with SS to SS threads I have found that teflon pipe dope, available at any hardware store, is great. This is the paste stuff not the tape. Made by Rector Sea...

Hi all, I have gone through 3 SimRad TP-10's so far. The cause? Water inside the case, even though they are supposed to be highly resistant to water penetration. One problem is the alternate heating and cooling between night and day. If a little spray or rain or dew sits on the top of the case aroun...

Engine Here

Hi all, Well my engine finally arrived...only a week late. The shipper put it in the wrong container so it went to Apia, Western Samoa by mistake. Fortunately there is a weekly ferry 'tween here and there. It was Friday afternoon by the time I got it clear of the port. No customs fees, just paperwor...

I'm still in American Samoa

Hi all, The engine fiasco has finally resulted in my purchasing another engine. It should arrive by ship this Wed. Then I have to retrieve and install the engine. So I figure another two~three weeks here. This past weekend hurricane Wilma brushed past AS. Saturday and Sunday were filled with wind an...

Nautical Almanac Free

Hi all, One of the reasons I did not carry my sextants is the cost of a new almanac every year. However a simple search on the web shows a multitude of free pdf files of the almanac and numerous freeware programs for doing sight reduction and plotting. Got me to thinking about liberating my sextants...

Hi all, If you can find it John Letcher's Self-Contained Celestial Navigation with H.O.208 is a great all around nav text. His book contains the complete H.O.208 tables. They are only 85 pages and no longer in print from the gov. His book is smaller than one of the H.O.249 tables and can be used for...

Samoan UpDate

Hi all, SunShine and I have been in American Samoa far too long. What was to be a 3~4 week layover for provisioning and the arrival of new parts is rapidly turning into a stay of two months or more. The reason? Breakdowns! My new AP and SS angles arrived in a timely fashion. The new AP did not requi...
