Late fall sail

I'm standing on Gaspee Point beach in Narragansett Bay this afternoon hoping to catch a beautiful November sunset. I look up and see a red hulled sloop racing north up Narragansett Bay towards Rhode Island Yacht Club. If I were a betting man I'd say it was Fred Mueller in his Cape Dory 27 trying to ...

Venting

Last fall I had my Marina unstep my mast for new antennae, new anchor light, topping lift, etc. The Marina caught a line under the forward hatch and when they lifted the mast out they took the forward hatch with it. No problem the General Manager said. We'll take care of everything. Fast forward to ...

Re: Southern New England Cruise, anybody?

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the winter meeting this year. For some reason, I have three other commitments on that day. Unusual since I rarely do anything during the winter months. Anyway, I would be interested in a summer cruise in southern New England. I Hope that someone will let me k...

Re: Newport Intl. Boat Show, Sept. 14-17, 2017

Hope to get there either Thursday or Friday. I try to go every year. Lots of vendors in numerous tents. Some good buys with some vendors, but bring lots of money if interested in buying a boat.

Re: ONE FOR SALE! One SOLD!Swivel arm electronic instrument

Jim, took a look today. I have two wooden handles on the inside of the companionway (one on either side) that may pose a problem. Don't know if they are standard Cape Dory. Also have a wooden box built around the bulkhead instrument backs on the inside of the bulkhead which I believe will support th...

Re: ONE FOR SALE! One SOLD!Swivel arm electronic instrument

Hey Jim, is the smaller unit still available? Let me know. If it I,s I need to go down and measure to make sure it will swing far enough into the companionway before I commit. Hope all's well. Phil

Re: Interior veneer

Thanks to all who helped on this. I actually purchased some teak veneer from amazon today. I have some epoxy left over from a previous project, so I think I'll use that as an adhesive as Steve suggested. My plan now is to sand the sole, stain the new veneer, cover the new veneer and the sanded sole ...

Interior veneer

Spring projects begin. Seems that my focus on making the exterior look good the last few years was at the expense of the interior. Now I'm paying for it. In the main salon of my 28' where the interior sides of the bunks meet the sole, there are strips on either side that, at an angle, join the sides...

Re: CD31 Pin Stripe

Now that we're talking about cove stripes, I'm adding one to my CD 28 this season. I've had a local sign shop create the bow and stern portions from the template on-line and matched the color with some tape from west marine. Now for putting it on. I asked my yard if they had anyone with the skill to...

Commisioning mishap

I will spare everyone my stupidity. Suffice it to say that during commisioning of my CD 28 an original peice of Cape Dory hardware was lost overboard in about 6 feet of murky muddy water. It's that round peice of bronze that fits over the anchor chain hole in the deck. It has a hook on it that hooks...

Sometimes a simple solution to a problem is right in front of your eyes but you just don't see it. I just never thought of that. It sounds like an easy way to do it and I will try it this fall. Thanks Jim. Phil

PVC

I also construct a frame out of PVC on my CD 28. However, I always have a problem placing the tarps around the side stays. I have an upper and two lower stays on each side. Has anyone ever undone the two lowers and attach them somehow to the upper to make it easier to place the tarps around them? I ...

Cuttyhunk

I think I'm leaving for Cuttyhunk on Thursday to avoid the rush and poassible thunderstorms. I hope to see the other boats there on Friday. If anyone is going on to Mattapoisett on Saturday, It wouold be nice to sail together. If i'm not inside I'll be on a mooring outside. Or, if anyone has a radio...

Mattapoisett

Weather permitting, I hope to be in Cuttyhunk on the 29th with SPYDER, a Cape Dory 28. I'm thinking it may be difficult to pick up a mooring on a Friday afternoon in August (I hate anchoring). If the weather looks good, I may head out on Thursday. I'm travelling from Wickford Hbr in Narragansett Bay.
