Hi,
I meant running gear like blocks, clutches, winches, travelers, furlers, etc.

Re: New Boat Inspection
Hi Fritz, Corroded chain plates are the big bugaboo. A pain to replace. There's plenty here on how to repair, etc., just do a search. Next, soft decks due to moisture intrusion. Another giant job to correct. I'm not sure about specific mods, but newer boats had more teak, and more bronze. Sailing pe...

Re: How to determine where a leak is coming from
Hi,
One of the great things about this board is that someone else has had your problem and solved it.
Go to the search function and type in "leaks". You'll now have winter's reading to get you up the learning curve.
Best of luck,

Re: CD 25 Off Shore Capabilities
Hi Chris, If you go to the "about Cape Dorys" section of this website, you'll find a link to a site that lists performance and seakeeping qualities of many, many sailboats. In there, you'll be pleased to find that the Cape Dory 25 has a very favorable capsize ratio and a nice, seakindly mot...

Re: Access hatch in cockpit sole of 28 Cape Dory
Hi: Well, Pacific Seacraft vessels have a large hatch installed in the cockpit "floor". If they think it's a sound practice, then it probably is. I installed a 6 inch round access hatch in the cockpit "floor" of one of the Cape Dorys I owned, that worked just fine. Good Luck, Ton...

Re: Genoa blocks
Hi: I crewed on a boat that had hexaratchet genoa blocks. This is what happened: The genoa sheet is trimmed in, let out, trimmed in, out frequently (constantly?) while sailing. If the block is clicked into the ratchet mode, the sheave is locked, so instead of rolling smoothly, the line is yanked thr...

Re: Starter wiring problem, maybe?
Hi, There was a lot of discussion on this issue in the past. If you do a search in this website on "intermittent starting" you'll find a lot of help. Often, the problem was corrosion in the ignition key, starter switch and attached terminations. Replacing the starter switch with a Cole Her...

Hi Paul: One of the great things about this website is that it's more than likely another Cape Dory owner has encountered your problem and come up with an effective solution. All you need to do is use the "Search" function above. Try a search on "stress cracks" and you'll fine to...

Re: Engine oil stain on cabin sole
Hi: I used teak cleaner (oxalic acid) on my cabin floor and eliminated dirty engine oil stains. No sanding of the thin veneer is needed. Three coats of varnish was then applied, which protected against future staining. Since the cabin floor is not in the sun, the varnish doesn't break down. Good Luc...

Hi:
I used to have a mini beanbag chair aboard. Super comfortable, versatile, easily stowed, not damaged by spray, inexpensive.

Hi Pete:
Check out Jiffy Jax. Here's a link:
http://jiffyjax.com/
I had them on my CD28 and now on my C&C 27.
What I like best is you don't have to modify your sail cover.
Good Luck,

Re: Loose footed vs fixed foot mainsails
Hi;
A loose footed main will allow you to tie up the bunted portion of a reefed sail without having to wrap the ties around the boom, eliminating the potential of tearing the sail at the reef.
