Singer 20U
Hi Marilou: I did a "Singer 20U" search on Google and got a lot of useful hits. It's a industrial straight stitch and zizag machine. It doesn't have a walking foot. If you can get one in the $250 range, it say go for it. If you're in the $500 and up range, think about a walking foot Sailri...

Main sheet traveller
Hi Jac: I replaced mine with a Harken ball bearing system. You can go to their web site and it'll walk you through the correct components required for your vessel. They sell a track specifically for upgrades that has the same hole spacing is your existing track, so no hole filling and redrilling is ...

Ty Sr. vs CD-22
Hi Tim: The Ty Sr. is a strictly a daysailor. There's no water tankage, no sink, no stove, no icebox; but the 22 is so equipped. The Ty is a 7/8 rig, while the 22 is masthead. The 22 has a main boom sheet on a traveler, while the Ty has the older triangular main boom sheeting arrangement, same as th...

Light duty sewing on a heavy duty machine
Ron: To sew "regular" stuff, just change to the appropriate size needle, say a 9 or 11 on very light stuff and the appropriate lighter thread. The no. 14 you use for sailcloth and Sunbrella will work just fine with medium weight fabrics. You'll probably have to reset the thread tension, bu...

Auto Parts Store
Hi : I went to an auto parts store and picked up brown vinyl tape for a lot less than the same thing at a marine store. I had no problems with adhesion, etc. Check it out! By the way, all you CD'ers with boats that don't have a sheer stripe, I strongly suggest you look into adding one. The sheer str...

Some Alternatives
Hi: Somewhere, long ago, and maybe even on this board, I copied a list of sewing machine models that were represented as being good zigzag machines capable of sailmaking. They are: Pfaff 130, Pfaff 138 Singer 107, 143 Brother B652 There's a lot on the web regarding the Pfaff 130. It can be thought o...

Painting the boom
Hi Richard: Here's what I did: First I removed all hardware from the boom; cleats, blocks. etc. including the end caps. You may find serious corrosion where the stainless fasteners contacted the aluminum boom. This may require you to slightly relocate affected fittings. If so, I recommend you drill ...

Rigging
HI:
You can download a copy of the Owner's Manual right here on this web site. It's loaded with useful info that you'll find helpful. It states that the mast should have no rake.
Good Luck,

Vang vs. Traveler
Boyd: It's apples and oranges. Use the vang for flattening the main when on a reach. If it's a non-rigid vang, it can be used as a preventer when sailing downwind. (Yes, I know some sailors disagree with this.) Use the traveler to depower the main and so reduce weather helm. Hard on the wind, the tr...

Oil drain Hose
Warren:
I wedge an empty gallon milk jug in the bilge and let the oil drain into that while I sip a cool one in the cockpit. Remember to run the engine first so the oil flows faster.
Way better than sucking the oil out through the dipstick tube!

Tony Jeske

Impeller source?
Hi: I have a Universal M-18 engine in my CD-28 and am looking for an raw water impeller for my spares kit. I was stunned to see a $41.00 price for this item at Marine Diesel Direct on the web. I'm sure if I go to my local Universal engine dealer I'll get the same kind of sticker shock. Have you foun...

Whisker pole length
Hi: Whisker pole lengths are adjustable so that you can properly pole out a 100% genoa, a 130 or a 150. So your shortest pole length should be not less than your "J" dimension. Currently I have a twist lock pole, i.e. twist to unlock, pull out to desired length and then twist to lock. The ...

Missing Post
Hi OJ:
Another one of those "five minute jobs"! After several tries, I couldn't get the photo to post and so deleted the post until I could figure out what went wrong. I guess I really din't need the photo after all, since you answered my question.
Thanks!
Tony

Problem areas
Hi Jeffrey: As you may already know, gelcoat crazing is a non-serious problem on Cape Dory's. Another problem, worse for some of us, is their propensity to back up wildly. I have not heard of cabin top compression problems except on older Typhoons, so I don't think that'll be an issue for you. Deck ...

Caution
Hi: The CD-28 has a deck stepped mast. The loads from the mast are transferred to the four bulkheads that make up the head compartment via a steel plate embedded into the cabin top. The "normal" solutions for repairing delamination, as outlined by Russel and Ron Musk, will need to be modif...
