I used some UHMW strips when I fabricated a battery shelf that slides outboard and inboard so I can easily access the batteries. I at first thought of using drawer slides, but I experimented with the strips (I bought a large sheet of it because I needed about 16" of it). I was so impressed I us...

Reflectex

We lined our ice box with Reflectex about 9 years ago. It probably helped a bit, but it's mostly used for radiative heating problems, not convective or conduction. Most of the heating in the ice box, being so close to the engine is conductive. We still have the box lined with it, figuring every litt...

Years back there was a heated discussion of this product on the CD board. As I remember, it was ineffective.

Bit the bullet and added a solar panel

We just returned from a 75 day cruise to Maine. Our ice box, like most, is not insulated, except for the reflectex we put in about 10 years ago. It helps, but is no solution. We have a refrigeration unit that takes about 4.5 amps when it runs. When at anchor for several days, we would have to run th...

Bill, I've trickle charged in the past. What I did was plug the charger into the cigarette lighter socket and selected which battery I wanted to charge by using the battery switch (don't use "ALL", though). I did disconnect the little lamp that glows when the battery switch is not off so t...

similar problem

Bill, Last year as we exited the Cape May Channel, heading back to the Chesapeake, I noticed our alternator was not charging the batteries. We anchored near the beach by the channel and I did some measurements. The alternator was putting out a good voltage, measured at the starter motor, but nothing...

heading north, too

We also are heading to Maine. If you head that way, we'll keep an eye out for you. Our tentative departure date is June 15.

Connecticut River anchorage

Last year we anchored above the bridge, in the narrow channel between the eastern shore and Goose Island. This was in late June and no other boats were there.

also heading to Maine

After our very enjoyable cruise in LI Sound and Martha's Vineyard last year, we are planning this year to head to Maine from the Chesapeake, leaving sometime around June 10th or so. We expect to spend 3 months away from our home port. Hope to see some of you then.

OJ, I took many, many photos of just the sea. The color kept getting bluer and bluer, with all shades of shadows. I suppose many of us have been asked what is there to look at when there's just horizon all around. When I was working down at the pole, I would just gaze at the horizon for hours. Same ...

I have some photos I took during the trip on Whisper from Annapolis to Fajardo, PR. I'll post them shortly and add the link on this thread.

Right now there's a great snowfall here in WI. Expect 7-9" through tomorrow. When we don't sail, we x-c ski. Hitting the hills this weekend!
