Bermuda Trip

Steve, Bermuda and back would be an admireable accomplishment and an experience. You may want to read a blog by Doug Campbell, a writer for Soundings, who made the trip for the first time last year. Actually he did the Bermuda 1-2 -- singlehanded over and his wife as crew on the way back. Doug has a...

2008 Sailing Adventures/Plans

One of the great things about sailing is that there is adventure ahead for everyone of us - whether novice, seasoned cruiser, or somewhere in between - if we get out there and stretch alittle more than we have done in the past. * My first goal is to just do more sailing this year. Last year I spent ...

Mast Raising and Lowering

Bill,

I sent an email to you with the procedure and three pictures. Also, I forwarded an email received in October from Kurt about the procedure (virtually identical) he uses on his CD27.

Best regards,
George

Hinged Mast Step

Bill, Many Westsail 32's and 28's have hinged mast steps. The mast pivots forward using the boom for leverage and a 120 ft rather than the normal 90 ft mainsheet to control it. There is a published procedure for raising and lowering the mast. If you are interested in seeing it, I can get you a copy....

Traveler for CD26

Lenore, I only have one mainsheet on my CD26. On the starboard side it is knoted at the deck-level block. Guess I cannot see any benefit to having both ends adjustable. I have a good deal of excess length, but never checked to see how much. I often put the excess on the lazerette lid when sailing, i...

Fenix in Darwin Part1

Fred, it is always to good to get an update from you and hear where you are and what you are seeing and experiencing. Especially for us landlubber, occassional sailors.

Thanks for sharing and best regards,
George

Fast Passage to the East

Bill Slater suggested that I post this article to the CD message board. Last weekend, April 13-15, a crew member and I sailed Wings of the Morning , a CD26, offshore to Sabine Pass (actually crossed the border into Louisiana) and back. The winds reached 10 knots stonger than predicted in the marine ...

Hidden HIN#s

Marylou, You asked where the hidden factory HIN numbers are. On my 1985 CD26 I have discovered two so far. One is molded in the inside of the hull in the port cockpit locker up high. The other one I have found is on the port side of the cabin below the electrical panel. Don't remember the exact posi...

Wow, 5 knots of current! You need an motor that can push the boat at hull speed (about 5.9 knots) so that you can make 1 knot of actual progress against that kind of current. I bought my CD26 in 2003 and it had a 2000 model Yamaha High-Thrust 9.9hp 4-stroke with 25" shaft. The prop is 11.75&quo...

Outboard for CD26

I have a CD26 and the well is considerably larger than in a CD25, which means more options. I bought my boat with a Yamaha 9.9hp 4-stroke High Thurst motor. The prop is 11.75" diameter and the shaft is 25". It has never come out of the water. It will push the boat at 5+ knots. A lttle over...

Barrier Coat Product Recommendation

I will not comment on whether or not you should barrier coat your hull. With my "new" boat (Westsail 28) I did not have a choice since the gel coat was stripped off about 6 years ago. After doing some research I decided to go with Interlux Interprotect 2000 instead of West System because o...

Rebedding Thru-hulls

Besides rebedding the thru-hulls, I would encourage you to rebed the backing plates as well. If they are not in good shape, then make new ones.

Fenix Interior Modifications

Fred, On your website where you discussed the planned modifications, you had planned to convert your head to a Lavac-style. On the Westsail 28 that I am now recommissioning I am eliminating the pressure water and the electric head. The Jabsco head (bowl and base) look like the pictures I have seen o...
