Re: Moisture in keel
Steve -- Stork (also '82 CD 30) had a similar problem. The bilge sump is right behind this area, and so there will be moisture near there, anyway. However, Stork had apparently been allowed to freeze in some winters, and the water in the bilge expanded outward a little, making star-shaped patterns i...

Re: *** Marine Battery Use Survey ***
I'm sure West Marine SeaGel batteries are made by somebody else -- Any guesses who?

Re: Cabin Sole Refinishing
I sanded mine lightly with a palm orbital, and varnished with Verathane. Looks and lasts great.

Ditto for "Ice Bird", by David Lewis. One *tough* crazy guy, trying to singlehand around Antarctica in a small boat.Joe Myerson wrote:warning, "don't try this at home." --Joe

Re: Cutter vs. Sloop
Where the cutter *really* shines is in heavier air, when you sail with staysail and reefed main. You can take quite a blow, or singlehand in much greater comfort, with this configuration.

Re: Shaft Log Hose - Need Advice
With the engine out, it shouldn't be that bad. When I did mine (CD-30), the hardest part, by far, was removing the engine. I tried several different ways of doing it without engine removal, and finally bit the bullet. It was a bit of a hassle, getting the hose out from all the fiberglass debris that...

Re: Floating hams--info needed
I had an Icom 720, MFJ manual tuner, and Hamstick on the rail on my previous boat, and it worked very well. I grounded the Hamstick by tossing a piece of stainless cable overboard, and clamping it to the antenna mount with a small visegrip. I switched over to Icom 706 ("neutered" for SSB) ...

Re: Lewmar winch equivalent?
I replaced the OEM winches on Stork (CD-30) with Lewmar 30 2 spd self-tailers, and have never looked back. I had to drill a new hole (I think just 1) in the bronze bases, but by rotating the base of the new winches a little, I was able to get the new hole(s) well away from the originals. This didn't...

cockpit lockers -- water in or air out
ldybg -- If you didn't tape up the cockpit lockers, you wouldn't have built up much, if any, pressure inside the boat. As they are large sources of water ingress, they are also huge vents for air escape, if you are trying to keep it in.

Greg -- When I replaced the hose on my CD-30, it looked like it just went into the fiberglass, but when I got right into it (had to pull the motor), the fill back there was very porous, and just surrounds the hose clamp. This was all a major PITA, but worth doing. I think the yard-workers just cramm...

I had this problem a couple of years ago, and wound up taking the exhaust manifold off, and cleaning out the galleys and holes that come from the engine through it into the exhaust elbow. It took while, but wasn't difficult. There are several holes something like 1.5 inch across that seem to fill up...
