Thank you

I'm going to print this out and keep it aboard. Thank you so much for this helpful post. Cliff

Welcome

Hi Doug, I can't help you much about the 33 in particular since we own a 27, but I will say this for buying a CD: you will likely not find a better group of folks who are more willing to help you than the folks on this post. The 27 is my first boat (acquired in 2003) and besides being a great, stabl...

Fantastic!

Thanks for this link -- it's just what the doctor ordered. I need to replace the impeller but was puzzled how to get at it since the bolts are facing backwards. The manual explains it quite clearly.

Yanmar Repair Manual

Now that I'm a proud owner of a used YSM8 for my CD27, I'm in the hunt for a service manual. The SELOC publication I find online doesn't seem to include YSM models from the descriptions posted. Anyone out there know about getting the correct repair manual for the YSM8?

Ah, decompression lever!

Yes, that's the name. Mine has a gray plastic end that looks like a thumb should go there. But which is the ordinary running position -- folded in or extended out?

Walker bay 8

We have had one for five years. I like it well enough but it took some time to get it sorted out to my needs. I bought it because it was relatively inexpensive, but it was tippy and rather dangerous in the choppy waters in Belfast. I swam a few times. But...when I added the stability tube it all cha...

Strange lever on my YSM-8R

Hi folks, I put an old YSM8 in my CD27, replacing my defunct Westerbeke 13. I love it and it's great to be back in the water -- the only thing I miss is the bit of extra power, but the boat sits better, the engine is quieter and simpler, and there is enough room around it to actually service it. One...

You folks are great -- much good advice here and helpful information. I hope to see many of you on the water this year in Maine!

Fuel questions

I'm thinking about relocating my mooring to a place that doesn't have a fuel dock and I'm wondering about the logistics of keeping the tank filled. We have a Yanmar 8 diesel. 1. I read that the only difference between auto diesel and marine diesel are taxes and dye. Is that right? -- so if I don't m...

Outboard

Well, I appreciate the outboard suggestion, Cathy, but I don't think I can bring myself to do it. In the end the reason I sail is because I'm a romantic and this would just unnerve the sensibilities too much.

cost of new engine

I've been quoted about 7500 for a new engine plus installation. It was interesting reading Warren's 2002 discussion on this matter. Someone suggested to him that he buy the CD27 with the Westerbeke 13 in it. That is probably the boat I ended up buying! -- so karma could have worked out badly for War...

Engine follow up -- it is genuinely dead

For those of you who followed this post earlier I have an update -- I shipped the Westerbeke to Hansen who tore it appart. It is pitted inside from a slow coolant leak apparently. It would need boring out etc. Plus there are a number of other things that it would need putting the repair bill at 8600...

Rebuild

Thanks again, everyone. It's in indoor storage this season for the first time -- and the mechanic tells me that I am not allowed to remove it myself while it is inside. No work from customers because of insurance. So this will have to wait until Spring when I can hoist it out myself. Hansen, curious...

raw water vs. fresh water

Several of you have drawn a line between fresh and raw water cooled engines. As with my last post, I may not really understand the difference. Nor do I understand why several of you are saying that raw water is a different story.
Thanks again.

Good heavens and thank you

You folks rock -- almost convincing me that I can do this. Frankly it still feels completely overwhelming. All I know about the fact that it is "dead" is that my mechanic said that the compression is around 280 when it is rated at 450. I don't think a rod went haywire. My guess is that it ...
