Datamarine Speed Log Quit
Seems to be the speed logs with these Datamarine units, no? Mine powers up, and the mode changes to reveal the last valid readings (average), but speed is 0.0. As far as troubleshooting, does anyone know the nature of the signal coming off the speed transducer? Pulse train? DC voltage? I'd like to i...

Thanks Marilou
I should record the running temprature - it may just be 180. I took the surveyor's word as gospel. He used an IR temp device aimed at the engine sensor.
If the tach is electronic, there may be a means of calibrating it.

propeller on 270
We discovered that one of the 2 blades on the prop is maybe 3/16" deflected back with respect to the other. The actual pitch angle appears to be the same, and no visible deformation, really. How much emphasis should be put on fixing this? I figured I can go the rest of the season....

Gauges on the 270
During the survey, the Tach and the water temp gauges read higher than than the surveyor's instruments. Is this fairly common, with perhaps a common fix (sender or gauge or both)? I assume that the tach is cable-driven and might require replacement of the whole thing. I'll need to check and make sur...

Mystery solved, but...
The reason we couldn't see the masthead anchor light is because there are 2 anchor light switches; one on the standard panel and another that looks like the PO installed it. both switches need to be in the proper position, then - presto! The windvane was aglow alright. Now I wonder just ho much spag...

That would be fantastic!! It will be nice to talk 270's with you!
I don't think dinner plans have been made yet. We will certainly keep you informed Marilou.

Dingy motor recommendations
We ended up with a next-to-new 9' Zodiac (thanks to Judith's connections) at a great price. Unfortunately we probably won't find an outboard for a comparable deal. Used units seem pretty rare, so I'm pricing out new ones for this weekend. As much as I'd like a 4hp (dingy's rated capacity), the 2.5's...

I'm actually relieved
Reading the responses here, it seems this is not unusual - I'm relieved that the plumbing configuration seems to be correct. Now, if the operator can just get up to speed!

Of Sea Monsters and Seacocks
We spent our first night aboard while anchored away from the slip this weekend, and I wanted to seek clarification on something that happened with the head. It looks like the PO installed a new head (Jabsco). While figuring out how to operate it, 2 things happened: we appearently sucked in a marine ...

Thanks all
Wow, this *IS* a great forum.
There is a lot of good detail in these responses, like providing for slight outhaul force. I'll be having a spare section of line around until the final install.
Ron, we'll scope out the transiant slip situation and post the findings.

Cape Dorys, reefing, and NC Coastal sailing
Hi folks, Before we bought our CD270 a few weeks ago, the surveyor noted a 2nd reef cringle, but no rigging for a 2nd jiffy reef. Since we are still in boat-buyer's-honeymoon (tending lovingly to it's care, feeding, and small upgrades), we were thinking of adding the 2nd reef rigging. My question is...

Broad Creek, etc.
Marilou is quite correct - McCotters has mooring depths of 6' minimum, and the approach channel is short and well marked. There is a shoal of sorts on the north side of the entrance, but I've never even seen breakers there. Other than that, I'm pretty new at this... so I can only report what the cha...

New Owner Question
We are new Cape Dory owners (hello, all)! We are thrilled at the construction and reputation of the Dory - this one's a 270. We are interested in flushing the fresh water tank, but the manual doesn't mention how. Must it be pumped out through the deck plate? Disconnect a feed line and reconnect it t...
