Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg

I do admit to very often beating longer waterline length boats like Hunters and Beneteaus in anything over 10kts. Especially downwind with the spinnaker out. But even upwind. Funny they are not out there in anything over 30! It may sometimes be down to me and my crew seeing a race and the other crew...

Re: How Servo Pendulum Self Steering Windvanes Work

The Hydrovanes are widely used in the around the world races and won the Golden Globe last year (However another one did break fatally for the unit in a knockdown off Cape Horn. I think it was the actual shaft for the wind sail and the skipper didn't have spares.) If I couldn't use a Cape Horn windv...

Re: Port light screens

Best screens for our boats. Used mine for twenty years and Western Lake Superior has formidable flying insects. I said Formidable.

Below Deck Autopilot CD33

Femme came with a factory added (I assume) 1982 Benmar Cetek Course Setter 21R rotary autopilot with an interesting rack & pinion mount to the rudder shaft. I've not heard of another 33, or CD for that matter, with a similar set up. All Edson cast bronze, and as heavy as the D/L ratio is for the...

Re: Ventilation under settees

I get a fair amount of condensation on Femme as we are in cold Lake Superior waters, but we don't seem to have that problem. While you have the berth board up, I would check to see if those spaces behind the vertical panels are draining fully into the bilge. See if a limber hole is clogged or if the...

Re: electric outboard for TySenior

I agree with your sentiments. My brother says he can charge his Torqueedo Cruise fully at a speed that works for his cruising style with his solar array which I believe works out to about 240w. Once they get the range increased on these motor/battery sets I would also think them superior to combusti...

Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg

We are John thank you. In fact, we are both working on our respective boats this weekend and I've been out for a couple sails already. "BOATS!" as we say, whenever one goes to a hardware store for parts or draws blood crawling through some godforsaken locker. It is not really sailing seaso...

Re: Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg

Love Olin Stephens designs. His Tartan 34c was really the only other boat we were looking at when we got our 33. I have sailed them a fair bit and they are a joy to sail upwind, one finger on the tiller. Very different boats I know but two good old ones for sure. And It was very clear that the CD's ...

My Screens of Schooner Bay screens have lasted since 2004. Highly recommended. I'd go with them and get your order in soon.

Whoa. This guy doesn't like Alberg

Greetings sailors, I came across this thread from 2020 and am posting here because it is such an intense alternative viewpoint specific to Carl Alberg to probably everyone's on this board, including mine. And I would be interested in what people say in counterpoint. Interesting how he bases his argu...

Re: interior make over

For a Typhoon, I think you would actually create a fair bit more work trying to fit adhesive fabric to the interior curves and shapes, and it would likely look less than ideal. I think it would be a simple matter, if taking a few steps in the process, to remove things from the interior and wipe it d...

Re: Recommended Book On Sail Repair?

Hey John, I like Don Casey's Complete Illustrated Sailboat Maintenance Manual. There is a section on sail repair and maintenance. Anything by Don Casey generally is written for the average bloke who can pound a nail and screw in a screw and it tends to be very practical and thus to me, particularly ...

Re: Battery size to run a small auto bilge pump

I agree, I bet you could get away with a 12 volt motorbike battery with a solar trickle charger hooked up to it. Generally, panels that make less than 1.5% of a battery's rated capacity in amp hours don't require regulation. I bet there are online panel charger options though that are regulated. Bat...
