Re: New book released: global circumnavigation on a CD30
I thoroughly enjoyed John & Kara's book - I highly recommend it. Their blog at http://orcasvlog.blogspot.com is enjoyable to read also, and has a lot of great pictures of their trip. Update #14 in 2010 has a couple of good photos of their solar panel installation - a practical solution, in my vi...

Re: Smoke in exaust
Hi Dixon,
I had similar symptoms with my Yanmar 3GM30F. It turned out that my mixing elbow was all clogged up, and replacing it fixed my problem. If you've not changed yours in a few years, I'd check it for clogged passages.

Re: CD-33 Engine Alignment
Thanks, Zeida. Your pictures are great. I take it that you leave your shaft log in place, and change the cutlass bearing with it installed. It sounds like your alignment technique is a little different than mine - but you've answered my question regarding movement with the boat back in the water. I ...

Re: CD 25D engine mounts and shaft aligment
Hi Mike, I believe you'll find the engine mounts from Bushings Inc are rated for engines that weigh up to about 800 pounds. I have those very same engine mounts on my CD33, supporting a Yanmar 3GM30F that my P.O. had installed by a reputable installer 15 years ago. These engines weigh about 350 poun...

Re: What to do with old sails?
Cut it up to make bags. For example, Sailrite just released a great video to make a market tote bag, which is a great project if you're new to sewing. I made one with my old mainsail, and some scrap sunbrella for the handles. It's a nice bag because it stands up on its own, making it easy to use. ht...

Re: CD 33 Genoa Track Size?
Hi Tom,
I believe it's 1 1/4" wide by 3/16" thick. A couple of years ago, I ordered these mid-ship cleats for my genoa track, and they work great: http://search.defender.com/?expression=612955

Re: CD 10 Oars
Hi Dick, I went thru exactly your same issue with my CD-10 about a year ago, and worked with Stephen at S&T to get it resolved. My CD-10 is #1396, and it also measures 41" between the aft set of oar sockets. I went with the 7 ft spoons from S&T, and they are great. I had the original ri...

Sailrite is also a good source for leather, as well as all the sewing supplies you might need. They also have a helpful article on working with leather on their product page - under the Documents tab. http://www.sailrite.com/Leather-2-3oz-P ... ey-Cowhide

Re: Inflatable Dinghy Floor Opinions Wanted
I bought a Walker Bay Odyssey inflatable air floor several years ago - great boat, but it's been discontinued. I much prefer the air floor over a slat floor, and I agree with all the previous comments regarding stability of the air floor. It's also a more rigid hull. But consider that the air floor ...

Re: Nav app.?
I like Navimatics Charts & Tides for two reasons: 1) it's only $20 per region, such as the US East Coast, and 2) it integrates with Active Captain very nicely. With an Active Captain subscription (free), you have access to real-time reviews of marinas, anchorages, hazards, etc from other mariner...

Re: Cape Dory Owners at Herrington Harbor in Deale, MD?
Hi Dave,
I have a CD33 at Herrington Harbour South on the end of B dock as well as a CD10 on the dinghy rack - there must be 4 to 5 other CD's at HHS alone, and of course, there are a few at North. There is a cocktail party at HHS this Saturday from 5 to 7 on the beach; can you make it?

Re: New Owner of a CD 10
Hi Dick, I recently bought #1396 and did some cosmetic work on her over the winter. I also purchased a set of S&T spoon oars; after talking with Steve at S&T, I went with the 7 foot oars. He was a big help; I suggest you give him a call before ordering your oars. I'm very happy with the ding...

Try Installing Low Voltage Starter Relay
Hi Leslie, I might suggest trying a low voltage starter relay, like the Bosch WR-1, before rebuilding your starter. The relay just boosts the voltage to your starter; they are inexpensive, easy to install, and they do no harm. A clicking starter is a common problem on sailboats, particularly older b...

Boat Number Plates
I used these Boat Number Plates available here: http://boatnumberplate.com/inc/sdetail/4110/4082 . They've worked very well on my PVC inflateable for about 4 years; just be careful when you apply them by taping off the area and prepping the surface.

I Agree with Ralph
The 33 and the 330 have the same hull, and I agree with Ralph's numbers. I use the same haul out and diver schedule on the Chesapeake as Ralph does. Cleanliness of the prop is a big factor on speed; my Yanmar 3GM30F will push me along at 5.5 knots with a clean prop at 2800 rpm, and about 4.5 knots (...
