Wanted: Typhoon on Chesapeake to sail home
I am looking for a Cape Dory Typhoon in sailaway condition on the Chesapeake. We live on the water between Cape St Claire and Sandy Point State Park, and I'd want to sail the boat home. A bigger Cape Dory or a Contessa 26 was the plan, but I'm constrained by my estimate of the MLLW in my slip at our...

We discussed that matter in this thread, among others. http://www.capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=18249 My opinion remains that the LOA above which a wheel is a requirement is far larger than any Cape Dory. Personal tastes vary, but there's nothing inherently wrong with using a tiller on a 36 foo...

An amateur (ham) radio license allows you to transmit a full 1500 watts, except for the 30 meter band where it's 200 watts. If you're limited to 100 watts it's because of your equipment, not any licensing restrictions. I assume that the marine SSB license test is a lot easier than the amateur genera...

Fred, I've been following the modifications you've made and your reports for a while. When I do get my boat (still a couple years off), I will definitely follow your lead before going offshore, namely in the area of outboard chainplates, bulwarks, and decreasing the cockpit volume. I am looking forw...

That's not quite right. The amount of extra weight needed aboard to displace another inch of water along the entire waterline is a very different thing than fore-and-aft trim. You certainly don't need to add thousands of pounds of anchor chain and/or water to the forepeak in order to raise the stern...

Breakdown of tillers vs. wheels on Cape Dorys 28ft and up
Does anyone know any numbers on how many boats had tillers vs wheels? How big of a job is it to replace a wheel assembly with a tiller on a Cape Dory 30? I know about weather helm considerations etc. but I would much rather be able to feel the pull on the rudder than be blissfully unaware of draggin...
