Re: Typhoon compression post

I installed a removable compression post in my 1976 Typhoon as a preventative measure. When refurbishing the boat 15 years ago I noticed a few small cracks along the base of the cabin where it merges into the deck. This is the indication that they=re may have been some compression in the past. It ha...

Re: Few questions on Typhoon

Definitely plan on re-bedding all deck hardware since the bedding material from the factory has dried out. Also I discovered that the factory used a minimal amount of bedding compound leaving leaks to the core under several fittings. Also check the backing plates for the chain-plates - They only use...

Re: Typhoon Genoa for sale

The genoa is still available has green UV protection. I used it with the FF1 roller furling system. If still interested send me a pm and we can discuss the transaction, shipping etc.

Re: Hoist Launching Typhoon

You could easily ramp launch - depending on the depth of the water and characteristics of the trailer.Movable bunks would be easier than jack-stands on a trailer. If you have 3-3.5 feet of water, a good truck should be able to launch it without a tongue extension although tong extensions make it a l...

Re: Beautiful Pictures of a Cape Dory 22, CD22 - Salvagable?

I rescued a Typhoon that was in MUCH worse condition than this nice boat. Upgrading the forestay may not be a problem if you decide to put a roller furler in place. The teak rubrail and toe rail may have to all come off then insert new sections and do a complete re-bedding (not a bad idea anyway). S...

Re: Restoring a Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender help

WOW! A lot of ideas. I restored a 1976 Typhoon with many serious hull issues. Bilge: I do not like placing foam in these areas since it can hold water and make for some ugly problems. The keel is molded lead that was sealed in the bilge. There is an eye that was used for placing the ballast into the...

Re: Sail Repair Tape or Patches

self sticking sail repair tape is only temporary. However you can prevent it from coming off by rounding the corners and when applying it, place sail on a flat surface and firmly press it onto a clean sail (no salt residue). Do not touch the sticky surface because the oils in your skin will weaken t...

Re: Winter cover frame

WInter Cover Frame.jpeg Poly pipes are attached to mast with 14 gauge wire passed through holes drilled into the pipe. Ends of poly pipe also have holes drilled through them to pass small diameter rope to attach to trailer (or cradle) and snugged tight. Mast had been positioned on supports high eno...

Re: mainsail leech flutter

When you think you might be reefing do it! Most people tend to hang on to the full main way too long. Actually in that wind and point of sail a reefed main, will do much better. Also perhaps the genny or jib cars could be pulled aft a few notches to reduce backwinding the main. You were actually sai...

Re: Winter cover frame

I have used 1.25" 100 and 160 psi poly pipe spaced about 14" along the mast. Drill holes in the ends and cut the hoops long enough to go over the mast and just past the gunwales. I also made a frame to support the mast keeping it 4 feet off the deck. Tie the hoops to the mast to keep them ...

Re: Is it safe to put this in the water?

Nice looking photo - make a large print then frame it so you can think about such a nice boat all winter when it is covered. You made the rudder and bottom safe - nice job! Congratulations on your success with such a great sailing Ty - I really like mine!

Re: Loose-footed main for a Typhoon

Timely question - I am also contemplating a new main with a loose-footed design. I had one on a larger boat but it had easier outhaul controls. Once you set up the outhaul at the mooring it should only take a little tweaking while underway. I really liked the loose footed main - made it MUCH easier ...

Re: Typhoon Weekender #1508 - Hull gelcoat replacement

Have you tried a random orbital sander with 60 or coarser grit for the final sanding. Works better than a grinder but uses a lot of discs! I borrowed several short jack stands from the local marina to elevate the Typhoon off the trainer so as to work on the keel and then add 3 coats of barrier coat....
