Nice article on Bristol 32

I love my CD27, but here's an article that was fun to read and made me think highly of the Bristol 32.

You're very welcome . . .

Your gift was also very welcome (and refreshing!). It was a pleasure meeting you and putting a face with the name.

What I did . . .

On the interior of the port locker, there was a 3/4" thick piece of built-up plywood & fiberglass, that was a backer for the throttle/shift assembly. I took a chisel and hammer and just carefully chipped it out. I started by just chipping a thin layer away. By the time I got close to the ma...

Delaware Bay

Delaware Bay to Cape May is tricky. I've only sailed a dingy there, behind Cape May, so that doesn't count as personal experience. But my chart shows lots of very shallow sandbars. Also, check this link:

I'm not entirely clear about the problem.

Is the sail not flat enough? How old is it? If it has adjustment cords in the foot and leach, you could slacken them. Since you're using a 140%, I assume it is a light air problem. I put myself and crew to leeward in those conditions, to induce heel, the sail gets proper shape from gravity, and the ...

Pressurize the system and observe?

I guess the simplest way to pressurize the fuel system is to run the engine, but I always found it hard to observe the engine when it was running, mostly vibration made standing puddles of fuel seem to be flowing, and also because I did not like to get as close as necessary to observe. My YSM8 had a...

How to save on shipping . . .

There are Cape Dory owners evenly spaced along the East Coast between you and any CD25D you can find. I'll volunteer to crew for you for the Chesapeake Bay stretch. I'll bet others would do the same for the ICW from Virginia Beach south. So, as long as you're willing to travel to buy, you could broa...

Come to Annapolis and do a side-by-side comparison

I've got a CD27, and there's a CD28 at the end of the pier.

The CD27 has more deck/cockpit space and less cabin space than CD28. The CD28 has basically the CD30 cabin, and fits it in by not having a lazarette. The CD28 at my marina is a definitely a cutter/double-headsail rig, with a bowsprit.

What else it could be

Why do you think it is an air leak? Starting, running, and then stalling also can indicate a clogged filter (it might idle, but will stall if you give it more throttle), or a blocked vent on the fuel tank (it will run again after the vacuum bleeds away). My CD27 originally had an outboard bulb on th...

Disavowed Alberg design?

I do not know what the boat in the photos is, but for what it's worth, there is a Typhoon size boat in my marina that looks very like the Sea Sprite 23. The owner told me that Alberg designed it, but would not allow the builder to call it an Alberg design, because he did not like their build quality...

Mast steps

I've used ascenders, and IMHO they require a lot of effort for the vertical gain, when compared to any kind of ladder. I installed folding, aluminum mast steps on Lilypad, which have the advantage of being always ready for instant use, but the disadvantage of weight and extra holes. I wear a rock-cl...

CD27 as first boat

Sea Hunt: Lilypad was my first sailboat. Before the purchase, I'd crewed on other boats, taken overnight cruising lessons, and bare chartered a Hunter 28. My experience was moderate, but I've never found the CD27 to be too much boat, and there have been 1 or 2 times when I was glad for every foot. J...
