Check this link. I know Dan personally, and he never does anything half-way.

It depends . . .

It seems like there are a number of different props installed in various CD27's, and the amount of space left for the zinc depends on what you've got.

Before my repower/reprop, there never was a stock size that fit mine, so the boat yard would cut one down for me.

Some parts of the Bay froze

I saw ice in Whitehall Creek, Severn River, and some coves off the Patapsco in Baltimore. Not for long, not too thick, and not bank to bank, but ice all the same. On the Bay proper, the Annapolis Capital reported that a couple of teenagers got in trouble when the ice floe they were on floated away f...

Fiberglass holding tank

Before I bought Lilypad, one of the prior owners had a boatyard install a fiberglass holding tank. It is outboard of the head, and uses the hull as one of the sides of the tank. Fore-aft, it fills the space between the two bulkheads. So, it maximizes the tank volume for the available space, more so ...

Different setup

On my 1978 CD27, the winches are on top of a stack of teak as high as the coaming. I've never seen that on any other Cape Dory. Does anyone know if they built them that way?

Coast Guard Rescues catamaran sailors

I read a quote once by a catamaran sailor, who said, comparing mono- to multi-hulls, that he'd "rather be upside down on the surface, than right side up on the bottom." It's true that cats serve as their own liferafts, as these sailors learned, but if the USCG had not arrived, what good wo...

Why they did it?

I don't know.

You would have to remove the lead to send the rest of the boat to a landfill. And if it was a repair job, I would expect to see neater cuts, and the removed portion on the trailer, which it wasn't.

I'll ask marina owner John White the next time I see him.

She was Hull #CPDD0877M75B.

It's definitely hollow

Some poor soul had a Typhoon upside-down on a trailer at my marina, with most of the keel removed by a sawzall. The lead only fills the lowest 12 inches or so, maybe less. I have lots of pics, but couldn't get them to post.

Plus she's a hybrid!

She has diesel-electric turbines, with 2 fixed "pods" and 2 "azimuthing," which I take to mean rotating.

I wonder whether, when they are using fewer than all 4 pods, they lock the others, let them free-wheel in neutral, or use them to regenerate electricity?

I have one

My 1978 manual has drawings of all the CD's that year. (This is not the hull loft line drawing, if that's what you want). I've scanned the CD27 and CD30 cutter for myself and a friend, and used Photoshop to clean them up. The end result is good enough to hang on the wall. Send me a PM with your emai...

Floor, ceiling, or spirketing?

Only on a sailboat could "floor" and "ceiling" refer to the same thing, which is actually on the side of the place in question. I suggest that henceforth we all refer to those ash strips as "spirketing", because THAT will avoid confusion. :D
