Dean, It sounds to me like you're fighting a continuous current. If so, the tidal range will simply slow it somewhat and then increase it again. On my previous Ty Weekender, I had a 4-to-1 purchase boom vang with a long tail. Using that between the jib halyard and jib tack shackle, I would lower and raise the mast by myself. (Note: That was over 20 years ago and I was probably a bit stronger...)

Frequently the transmission has lower gearing for reverse.

That was probably the least intrusive way from the Peterson's perspective that Oasis of the Seas could have handled the situation. Good on 'em.
