Saturday, 7/3--Port Washington, Manhasset Bay, NY
Plan on meeting in the afternoon on Saturday, July 3rd. Realization’s
crew (Cruise Captain Cathy Monaghan and Bruce Halley) have
a 40+ nm trip from Morgan, NJ to Port Washington and will have
a fair tide (Slack) through Hell Gate at around 11:30 a.m.
So
we
will
probably arrive in Port Washington around 3:00 p.m. Fleet communications
will be on VHF Ch. 16 and 68.
If conditions permit, let's form a raft-up in the area just
south of the mooring field across from the Port Washington
Yacht Club (Approx. 40°49'05"N 73°42'29"W.
Click on the chart thumbnail in Figure 1 below.). If we don't
like this area, we can always move.
Once settled, let's all get together on one boat
or the raft for snacks, cocktails and dinner.
Bring one or two snack items to share with the rest of the
group and the fixin's for your favorite beverage. Then it's
potluck
for dinner. No, we don't throw everything into one pot and
whatever comes out is dinner (unless you want to). But whatever
you bring
it’s what we'll have.

Sunday, 7/4--Oyster Bay, NY
It's a short sail from Manhasset Bay to Oyster Bay but if
we have late morning fog like we did last year, we may get
a late
start so any daysailing on Long Island Sound before heading
over to Oyster Bay may not be possible. We should probably
head over
to Oyster Bay as early and as quickly as possible because
it’s
gonna get real crowded in there for the fireworks and the
Coast Guard will close off the channel into the harbor by 8:00
p.m.
and may make the The Cove off limits.
The fireworks will be shot off from a barge anchored just
north of the northern end of Cove Neck. There’s a Security
Zone around the barge, so please give it an extra-wide berth.
If we get into Oyster Bay early enough and it's not crowded,
we should find room in The Cove which is located off the southwestern
edge of Cove Neck and southeast of the harbor (Approx. 40°52'38"N
73°30'32W. Click on the chart thumbnail in Figure
2 below.).
Don't venture too far into The Cove, it gets real
shallow real
fast.
If it's
crowded, a raftup may not be possible or safe.

If The Cove is too crowded or has been designated
as off-limits by the Coast Guard, please anchor on the Cold
Spring Harbor side of Cove Neck to the east. (Approx. 40°53'10"N
73°29'16W. Click on the chart thumbnail in Figure

Figure 3. Oyster Bay – Cold Spring Harbor
If you are the first boat to get to Oyster Bay, please hail
Cathy Monaghan aboard Realization (VHF Ch. 16/68) and let her
know that
you’re there and in which anchorage – The Cove or Cold
Spring Harbor. If you’re in Cold Spring Harbor, please
provide GPS coordinates if possible. We want to make sure that
all the
boats end up in the same place.
And as at Port Washington, our previous stop, bring one or
two snack items to share with the rest of the group and the
fixin's
for your favorite beverage. Then it's potluck again and we’ll
all sit back and enjoy the fireworks.
If you’re a late arrival and the channel into the harbor
has been closed, use the Cold Spring Harbor anchorage indicated
above and contact Realization via VHF Ch. 16/68 and let us
know where you are. Please provide GPS coordinates if you can.
Monday, 7/5--City Island, NY
On Monday, Realization and her crew will be stopping at City
Island and getting a mooring from the Harlem
Yacht Club located
on the northwest side of City Island. See Figures 4 and 5 below.

Figure 5. City Island, NY
If you’ll be continuing on to City Island, please call
the HYC (718-885-3235 or VHF Ch. 72) well in advance to reserve
a mooring. If you want to meet up with us on City Island, let’s
get together ashore at the HYC’s clubhouse.
If you don't want a mooring, you can anchor anywhere outside
the mooring field but it’s a long dinghy ride to shore.
Moorings are $30, and a complimentary drink for you and one guest
is included in your mooring fee. The guest moorings are near
the edge of the mooring field, so you probably won't be that
far away from us. We’ll ask the launch driver to pick you
up if you don’t want to make the trip to shore by dinghy.
Let’s decide what we want to do about dinner after we
get there. There are lots of choices, including the yacht
club, but unfortunately, their restaurant is closed on Mondays.
